  • Enough problems without government

    Kent McManigal|Updated Sep 4, 2018

If you build a house in certain neighborhoods in Hawaii, you run the risk of having your house swallowed by lava. Along most coasts, hurricanes and tsunamis are looming dangers. In mountains, avalanches and landslides are seasonal threats. If you choose to build in Moore, Oklahoma, remember that tornadoes seem to enjoy the local scenery, and build below ground. Pick your spot, then deal with the risks that come with it. Unfortunately, no matter where you choose to live on...

  • Letter to the editor - Sept. 5

    Updated Sep 4, 2018

Freshman academy doing something right My grandfather was known to say, “Right is right and wrong is wrong.” I agree with him. I recently read in the newspaper about Clovis Municipal Schools students’ progress with The Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers tests. It appeared most schools were making gains and getting better in terms of passing; some more than others. Most agree this test poses a tremendous challenge to students and faculty. Certainly any forward progress toward mastering these conce...

  • Cats stay perfect with shutout of Lovington

    Peter Stein|Updated Sep 4, 2018

CLOVIS — Coming off the road with a 6-0 record didn’t quite heap pressure on the Clovis boys soccer team heading into Tuesday night’s home opener. It was after all, only early September. But every game is one the Wildcats would like to place squarely in the win column, so their first home game was no different. So Tuesday’s 6-0 victory in their 2018 Leon Williams Stadium debut was most important because it was another successful outing for the ’Cats, making them 7-for-7 i...

CLOVIS — The Curry County Commission took the first step in addressing the issue of political signage at the Events Center and fairgrounds during Tuesday's regular meeting. Spectra will be tasked with making a presentation to the commission by August and putting a plan in p...

  • Portales sweeps Clovis for first victory

    Eric Murray|Updated Sep 4, 2018

PORTALES — Sometimes, you have to see what you’re doing wrong, rather than just being told. That’s exactly what Portales volleyball coach Charity Gomez did this past week, and thus far, it’s been a success. Gomez’ Rams, coming off of a season-opening loss to Roswell last Thursday, earned their first win on Tuesday night against Clovis. Portales swept the match in three sets, 25-22, 25-10 and 25-16. “After we lost to Roswell, we just watched film on Friday — we didn’t practice,... Full story

  • Local reaction to Nike deal mixed and mild

    David Grieder|Updated Sep 4, 2018

If there’s a strong consumer response to Nike’s endorsement of pro-athlete-turned-activist Colin Kaepernick, it hasn’t quite landed in eastern New Mexico. Merchants in Clovis and Portales carrying Nike inventory told The News on Tuesday afternoon that they hadn’t yet seen any major local changes in the product’s sales following the polarizing Labor Day reveal of an endorsement deal with the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback. Employees of various shoe and apparel stores said Nike was one of their top selling brands, a... Full story

    David Grieder|Updated Sep 4, 2018

CLOVIS — A Clovis man arrested two years ago for soliciting a child faces the third-degree felony charge today in Curry County, starting with jury selection in a trial scheduled through the end of the week. • Report under way in sheriff accident

The Staff of The News|Updated Sep 4, 2018

PORTALES — Those parking barriers will get you. Roosevelt County Sheriff Malin Parker experienced as much Aug. 27 when he hit one in his duty vehicle while pulling out of a parking spot across from a hardware store in Portales. Parker said he was alone in the car and wasn’t on his phone, or texting — he just didn’t see the barrier that afternoon and “lightly bent” his bumper on impact, damage amounting to less than $500. Portales police are working on a report of the incident, but officials said Tuesday it was not yet ava...

Both the Curry and Roosevelt county commissions held special meetings on Tuesday in which they unanimously approved resolutions opposing straight-party voting. The two resolutions are nearly identical and call for their respective commission chairman, Ben McDaniel in Curry...

  • Much more work needed on clergy sex abuse cover-up

    Albuquerque Journal|Updated Sep 4, 2018

For those in the hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church who thought the fallout from clergy sex abuse scandals was over and dealt with, it is clear they were sadly mistaken. Public outrage has been renewed by stunning new developments, including accusations by a former high-ranking Vatican official who said Pope Francis himself looked the other way in violation of his “zero tolerance” policy on sex abuse. Meanwhile, a Pennsylvania grand jury under the state attorney general issued an exhaustive report on sexual mis...
