  • Vigil held in memory of Clovis librarians

    David Grieder|Updated Sep 1, 2017

CLOVIS — Margaret Hinchee's voice broke, and she cried at times, as she spoke about lost members of her library family. "Both women were strong and beautiful souls. The library will never be the same without the two of them," said Hinchee, director of the Clovis-Carver Public Library, which was the scene of a mass shooting on Monday that claimed the lives of library workers Krissie Carter and Wanda Walters. "My staff — we are strong, we are family, we will get through this. We...

CLOVIS — Suspected killer Nathaniel Jouett will remain in Clovis’ juvenile detention facility, at least for now, following a hearing Thursday in District Court. Prosecutor Brian Stover asked Judge Fred Van Soelen to deny any request for release based on his concern Jouett is a threat to others as well as himself. Stover said police found suicide notes in Jouett’s home after the slayings. Jouett’s attorney, Jennifer Birmingham, said she was not opposed to her client remaini...

  • Cats close strong

The Staff of The News|Updated Sep 1, 2017

CLOVIS — If it didn't look like Clovis' day when it was down 1-0 in the first minute Thursday, it should have been obvious when the Wildcats gave up a first-minute goal in the second half too. But things flipped on a red card, and the Wildcats scored three times in the final 20 minutes, including a Markus Baumann tap-in with two minutes left as Clovis shocked Sandia Prep 3-2 at Yucca Middle School. "We had the momentum once we got that equalizer," Clovis coach Greg Trujillo s...

  • Cats focused on job

    Peter Stein|Updated Sep 1, 2017

CLOVIS — Life goes on. You hear it dozens of times, but it seems a bit more poignant when it hits home. Monday's tragedy at the Clovis-Carver Library has certainly hit home in the city of Clovis. A mostly quiet community doesn't expect to have any local fixture, especially a library, surrounded with yellow police tape. But since that happened, life has indeed gone on, including at the athletic fields. It will keep going on at Clovis High tonight when the Wildcats (1-0) host C...

Sophomore quarterback Wyatt Strand accounted for 173 yards of offense, including a 20-yard run on a fourth-and-13 in the closing minute that eventually set Hale up for the winner. • Hold on to hope even in tragedy

    Judy Brandon|Updated Sep 1, 2017

This past week has been devastating for many families and the city of Clovis. Many have asked “why” due to this week’s tragic event. If you have questioned “why,” you are not alone. Even King David asked God “why.” In essence David said “Oh God ... where are you?” David pleaded with the Lord in Psalm 10: “Why, O Lord, do you stand afar off? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?” The reality is that God does not hide and neither does He orchestrate the bad times in our...

  • Mountain trip reaffirms love and wonder of God

    Curtis Shelburne|Updated Sep 1, 2017

My wife and I were in Colorado recently. Living on the aptly named High Plains of Texas, at a tad over 3,800 feet in our particular part of those plains, we’ve got a pretty good start on altitude already. But I discovered long ago that my soul requires regular doses of much higher altitude, the kind that comes only with mountains. I love mountains in general, but I was ready for a good dose of some Colorado mountains. And, of course, if you want to go up Pikes Peak, and t...

  • Good or bad, weather doesn't stay forever

    Audra Brown|Updated Sep 1, 2017

There are times when it may seem like the wind will never stop blowing, the rain will never start falling, and the world is never going to be more than the hot, hard, dry desert that it is at that moment. But whether it is wisdom or foolishness, those of us in agriculture, who succeed and fail on the whims of the uncaring weather, keep going on the faith that the weather will always change — and eventually it will be certain to change for the better. In the middle of the summe...

  • Rams face upstart Lovington squad

The Staff of The News|Updated Sep 1, 2017

PORTALES — The football series between Portales and Lovington has always been a heated series, no matter the score. But most years, it’s been tough to call it a rivalry. The Ram-Wildcat showdown, which continues tonight at 7 at Greyhound Stadium, has traditionally been lopsided for somebody. Portales has won three of the last four, outscoring the Wildcats by an average of 17 points per win. Before that, Lovington had taken 24 of the prior 26 meetings, with most of those games as district opponents. A rivalry could be bud...
