  • ENMU men's soccer opens with scoreless tie

Sports editor [email protected] GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — The Eastern New Mexico men’s soccer team opened its season with a 0-0 tie Thursday, shutting out Colorado Mesa University in double overtime. We weren’t able to do that last year. This was a hard fought battle and we just stayed in it and played our game,” said Tate. James Gutierrez...

  • Brown: Finding a lost trailer no easy task

I’ve heard that finding a needle in a haystack is hard, but I’ve yet to come across a situation that produced the need to solve that particular conundrum. It’s not for lack of the items. Haystacks and needles are both common enough in the agricultural endeavors I’m involved in. Due to that lack of direct experience on the matter, I’ll abstain from any definitive judgements about the puzzles produced by the juxtaposition of needles and haystacks. I have, however, come acro... Full story

  • Rodriguez: Burning midnight oil produces rewards

    Helena Rodriguez

Ten years ago, when I was thirty-something, it took practice, but I finally learned how to become a coffee drinker. Now that I’m forty something, I’m trying to master another ritual of gracefully growing a bit older and wiser — getting up early. Getting up early is for the birds, be us spring chickens or retiring roosters. I feel like the former, a spring chicken afraid to spread its wings and fly too early in the morning. I practiced this summer, trying to beat the sun at daw...

The policy says students in school-sponsored extracurricular activities, or those who park a vehicle on Farwell High School property, are subject to random drug tests administered by a Waco-based...

  • Pet of the week — Sept. 2

Gender: Female Age: About 6 weeks old Gray domestic shorthair Breed: Gray domestic shorthair According to Tony Martinez, animal control officer, this kitten came in with her two siblings. This is a very calm and curious cat. The owner of this kitten just needs to have time to play and socialize with the cat while she’s still growing, said Martinez, adding the kitten can be playful, but the animal shelter isn’t the best place to see her playfulness in action. • Dobson: Humanity at its finest follows great tragedies

Students grow up. That painful reminder was hammered home these last few days after news broke in Albuquerque about the murder of little Victoria Martens. Patti Dobson Eastern alum Vincent Rodriguez (B.S. Broadcast Production, 2012) was assigned to cover the story, and was among the first on scene. What he witnessed — what all of the reporters, photogs, first responders, law enforcement officials, medical personnel witnessed — cannot be unseen. It cannot be erased from the...

  • System must take violence more seriously

One takeaway from the incomprehensibly tragic death of 10-year-old Victoria Martens is that the state’s agencies and systems don’t take domestic violence against women and children seriously enough. Victoria was raped, strangled and stabbed before her body was dismembered and burned, allegedly at the hands of her mother’s boyfriend and his cousin, Jessica Kelley, while her mother, Michelle Martens, watched. The boyfriend, Fabian Gonzales, had two prior convictions for violence against women, yet he had managed to game the ... Full story
