  • 'Democratic' socialism no less evil

    Kent McManigal|Updated Aug 28, 2018

Over the next few years you’re going to be tested. Socialism — the politics of envy, parasitism, and entitlement — is growing in popularity again. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren have recently been its elder cheerleaders. Now socialism is being given a fresh makeover. It has a new, young, and apparently articulate voice in Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. It’s being re-branded as “democratic socialism” as if adding mob rule (democracy) to socialism makes it less evil. • Politicization of woman's death a travesty

    Newsday|Updated Aug 28, 2018

The death of Mollie Tibbetts is a tragedy, and it’s one that highlights important concerns about this nation’s immigration policy, as well as the intolerable regularity of violence against women. The killing of the 20-year-old University of Iowa student, however, does not, in its newsworthiness, rise to the level of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian tampering in the 2016 election, any possible collusion of President Donald Trump with Russia, and the cascade of other illegalities now uncovered. • CHS football bell returning to locomotive home

    Jamie Cushman|Updated Aug 28, 2018

CLOVIS — The Clovis High School football bell is headed home. The Clovis Municipal Schools Board of Education unanimously approved the return of the bell — stolen off of the old locomotive at Hillcrest Park in 1959 — to the same locomotive where it once sat, now restored to its former glory and located at the historic rail yard organized by Clovis MainStreet. In return, CMS will receive a reproduction bell that Superintendent Jody Balch said is nearly identical. "I would...

  • Community remembers library shooting victims

    David Grieder|Updated Aug 28, 2018

CLOVIS — Howard Jones said it well, and said it succinctly: It hurts. The surgeries and the residual health issues after being shot last year, the stress for his family, the emotional pain: it all hurts, Jones said Tuesday after a short observance for the first anniversary of last summer's deadly shooting at the Clovis-Carver Public Library. "I didn't sleep at all last (Monday) night because I was at the courts on the hearing (Monday), and it just brought back more m...

  • Hounds heading east to open season

    Eric Murray|Updated Aug 28, 2018

PORTALES — At first glance, the Eastern New Mexico and Missouri S&T football teams don’t seem to be all that similar. Offensively alone, it’s like night and day. The Greyhounds once again return their “Ground Strike” option offense, while the Miners run a high-powered, uptempo spread offense, in which they throw it as well as they run it. However, despite these differences, these football teams may not actually be so different, according to ENMU coach Kelley Lee. “They rem... Full story
