CNJ staff photo: Kevin Wilson The Goodwin Lake Trail in north Clovis travels through a 32-acre parcel of land the city owns for drainage purposes, and covers about 1.125 miles. Clovis city officials are set for a ribbon cutting on a walking trail first discussed two years ago, on a piece of land many residents up until now have been unable to visit. The trails are located on 32 acres of city-owned land, adjacent to Prince Street and north of the North Plains Mall, that is primarily used for drainage. A walk through the facili... Full story
Peter Roper PUEBLO, Colo. — The Air Force is revising its plan for low-altitude training flights over Colorado to avoid the Eastern Plains, including the Army’s Pinon Canyon Maneuver Site northeast of Trinidad, according to Rep. Scott Tipton’s office. Tipton, a Republican, was given that assurance in recent meetings with the Air Force, said Tipton chief of staff Mike Hesse. “The Air Force told us they intend to move the proposed training range to over western Colorado, away from Pinon Canyon and southern... Though admission dollars are still being counted, Curry County Fair officials are estimating a gate attendance spike of at least 15 percent compared to the 2010 fair. “We’re still counting arm bands and the weekly passes we sold,” said Kevin Jolley, general manager of the Curry County Fairgrounds that held the fair Aug. 15-20. “We know the gate walk-up was around 30,000.” That number, Jolley said, was an increase of 5,000 visitors from the 2010 fair. Total money brought in is still being totaled, Jolley said....

Mark it as another chapter in a long and storied struggle over demon alcohol in Portales and Roosevelt County. A petition drive started by local restaurants and aimed at legalizing Sunday sales of alcohol in Portales may not hold the promise of rough and tumble politics of the past. But the developing struggle to...

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Steve Jobs and his family. Last week he announced he was stepping down, for health reasons, as Apple Inc.’s CEO. He no longer will oversee day-to-day operations at the world’s most successful technology company, but will serve as the company’s chairman of the board. We can think of no better characterization of Jobs than this quote from Igor Sikorsky, the Russian-American aviation pioneer: “The work of the individual still remains the spark that moves mankind forward.” That was... Mark it as another chapter in a long and storied struggle over demon alcohol in Portales and Roosevelt County. A petition drive started by local restaurants and aimed at legalizing Sunday sales of alcohol in Portales may not hold the promise of rough and tumble politics of the past. On one side there is Cattle Baron Manager Richard Chambers, who started the petition because he says his and other food...

“You are going to put your eye out!” That is almost a line from a classic movie, “A Christmas Story.” But it actually is a line from my childhood. I can’t remember how many times my mom told me that when I had wanted to try some new project. It was usually something as simple as me wanting to make a bow and arrow out of a tree branch and string. Now how on earth will that cause me to put out an eye? I remember one time, dressed in my best Roy Rogers outfit, just about to jump of a small storage building. There I...
