  • Joy makes it great to be alive

    Joan Clayton

Today is the day to be happy, and it can be a lifestyle. Life is glorious. Taste it. Smell it. It is delicious. Go barefooted. Sing. Laugh. Smile. Give yourself away. Win the prize. It’s called joy. “…the joy of the Lord will make you strong” (Nehemiah 8:10 NCV). You can do anything through Jesus, because he gives you strength. (Philippians 4:13) Today is all we have. Let’s make the most of it. Today is now. The past is past. Enjoy those loved ones while living your life. Time is fleeting. Opportunities may be...

  • What matters most is our opinion of God

With the beginning of a new college semester, I think back to my own college days. During those years, I had many wonderful professors who were friendly and engaging. Then I had a few that were really intimidating. One was an English professor. My sophomore year, I needed an English class so I chose an English professor that had a good reputation with students. But during registration, the class closed. My only option was English literature with the professor who had the reputation of being tough. Professor Anonymous (the...

  • Beef show gives youths ranching experience

    Argen Duncan

The Breeding Beef Show teaches participants what ranchers deal with every day, the show superintendent said. In the show at the Roosevelt County Fair, youth exhibited heifers — females that haven’t had a calf — and one cow with a calf, while the judge evaluated their physical appearance and movement. Superintendent Jim Duncan said the show lets youth who want to breed cattle promote the offspring. They may show animals they’ve bred or buy an animal, show it, breed it and show the calf the next year. “They... Full story

  • Economy more pressing issue at hand

Freedom New Mexico Leave it to Florida Gov. Rick Scott, who is known to have an old-fashioned hankering to stamp out illicit drugs, to keep pushing for a solution to yet another problem that’s already well on the road to solving itself. The problem: illegal immigration. Gov. Scott told The Associated Press he hopes the Florida Legislature will pass a law next year cracking down on illegal immigrants. Lawmakers failed to pass an immigration bill during their last session. “If somebody is in our country illegally and... Full story

  • Libertarianism starts with respect

I sometimes hear people make the claim that libertarianism is “Utopian,” just like communism, because “It sounds good on paper, but it will never work in the real world.” Ridiculous! Communism requires the impossible — omniscient central planners — in order to work. Libertarianism only needs you to not steal or attack; it places no obligation on others. Are you claiming that is beyond your ability? The Clovis area is not perfect, but it is good, and can be better. There is no Utopia, but you can prevent a... Full story

  • Leave open season on feral hogs

Here’s a wonderful deal for you hunters who didn’t get drawn this year or who didn’t manage to bag a deer, or elk, or antelope. How about a feral hog? They are classified as “nuisance animals,” so there’s no actual season. You can come shoot any time. Just have a license and permission from the landowner on private land. These feral hogs are descendants of pigs that escaped or were turned loose many years ago. They are said to be easy to hunt, and their meat to be tasty. A war is going on with these feral hogs all... Full story

  • My turn: Pioneer Day highlight of county fair

    Alisa Boswell

I got to enjoy the Roosevelt County Fair for the first time this week both personally and professionally. It was fun being able to ride the ferris wheel, tease the Portales firefighters at their display trailer and eat a good burger. But I think the biggest highlight for me was covering the Pioneer Days event Thursday morning. There were a lot of fascinating and pleasant people in attendance and I thoroughly enjoyed hearing their stories of growing up in Roosevelt County. If any of the younger generation think they can’t...

  • Longtime county residents honored at Pioneer Days Festival

    Alisa Boswell

Receiving Pioneers of the Year recognition at the annual Pioneer Days breakfast Thursday morning was both a surprise and an honor for Bill and Peggy Prater, according to Bill Prater. Prater, vice president for the Pioneer Board, said the board picks who is the Pioneer of the Year but when his name was submitted, he stepped out of the voting. “I really thought we should be 80 (to receive award),” Prater said jokingly Thursday. “I know some more people who have lived in the county their whole lives.” Citizens come up...

  • High school football fans eager for start of season

    Sharna Johnson

Bill Parson is known as Portales Rams’ greatest fan. Whether he’s sitting with the band during football games — he’s been named an honorary band member — marching with them in a parade, or breaking out across the field to wave a flag in celebration of a scored touchdown, Parson has become a part of PHS sports events. “We call him ‘Wild Bill.’ He never misses a game,” said Portales football coach Mark McAfee. “Everything is so positive with him....
