  • Letters to bring past to life

    Jamie Cushman|Updated Aug 23, 2018

FORT SUMNER - Long before the days of the internet, email and social media, people used good old handwritten letters to spread information. Now 150 years later, some of the original letters from the Bosque Redondo reservation, with the help of some Fort Sumner High School students, will bring yesterday to life. The "Summer Letters from the Reservation" event begins at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the Bosque Redondo Memorial. Historic Site Manager Aaron Roth said he went through the...

An ambulance and snorkel truck were called to the scene and Clovis Fire Chief Jerry Carter went on the roof to administer mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to Babe McClain, 45. McClain died later in the day at Memorial Hospital. McClain had lived in Clovis three years and owned Clovis... Full story

  • Rams expect spread again from Hope

    Eric Murray|Updated Aug 23, 2018

PORTALES — Portales and Hope Christian may not be district rivals anymore, but Rams football coach Jaime Ramirez expects nothing but the Huskies’ best tonight (7 p.m., Greyhound Stadium). So what is it about Hope that makes them such a tough out against Portales? “They have good athletes and I think their coaches do a good job with their kids,” Ramirez explained. “I think they just get up for our game.” Last year in Albuquerque, the Rams won just 16-0. Hope lost seven games la... Full story

  • Rivalry still going strong

    Peter Stein|Updated Aug 23, 2018

CLOVIS — Even with a week still to go before his team made its 2018 debut at Hobbs, Clovis football coach Cal Fullerton was already looking forward to it. And there was a lot to look forward to as Fullerton peered ahead before last Friday’s practice at Clovis High School. For one, the dawn of a new season — Fullerton’s second as Wildcats head coach. And then there’s the Clovis-Hobbs rivalry. How much better does it get than a high school football grudge match? “It’ll be...

The Staff of The News|Updated Aug 23, 2018

PORTALES — A fugitive wanted this month for shooting and injuring his girlfriend in Kansas was arrested this week in Portales, where he remained Thursday without bond pending extradition hearings. Eli Mendoza, 28, was arrested Tuesday outside apartments on the 1300 block of West Ivy after police were dispatched on a report of a man there wanted from out of state. He initially hid his identifying arm tattoos behind his back and told officer Andrew Olivas his name was Enoch, which police dispatch advised was one of his a...

  • ENMU volleyball has plenty of new faces

    Eric Murray|Updated Aug 23, 2018

PORTALES — This year is perceived to be a rebuilding year for coach Sia Poyer’s Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds volleyball team. ENMU was ranked seventh in the Lone Star Conference Preseason Poll, and has nine new players on a roster of 19. Nothing new, Poyer said. “You lose that many kids and people are like, ‘Hey, rebuilding year.’ To me, it seems like every year is a rebuilding year,” Poyer explained. “I guess I look at rebuilding differently. When you lose starters from...

PORTALES — Hopeful to begin development on a local pipeline section before year’s end, the board of the Eastern New Mexico Water Utility authority approved in a special meeting Thursday morning two recommendations from its newly created finance committee, which met immediately prior in Portales. • When in deep waters, ask for help

    Judy Brandon|Updated Aug 23, 2018

King David wrote a beautiful praise to God in Psalm 18. My favorite verse of that psalm is verse 16: “He reached down from on high and took hold of me; he drew me out of deep waters.” Evidently King David at this time was in danger and distressed. Several commentaries I studied noted the imaginary of deep water: Peril, danger, raging waters and life threatening conditions. As I write this today, Hurricane Lane, a category 4 hurricane, is headed for Hawaii. High winds, res...

  • Time waiting can be as important as time doing

    Curtis Shelburne|Updated Aug 23, 2018

What are you waiting for? The truth is that most of us spend the vast majority of our lives waiting for something. Maybe it’s a birthday. A vacation. A holiday. A graduation. A wedding. An anniversary. A retirement. Maybe it’s when the baby is finally born, or the student loan (good luck waiting that out!) or car or house or business loan is eventually paid off. You waited — even as you were working all the necessary hours and many more — to achieve that hard-to-reach busines...

  • Racing commission sets visitation order

The Staff of The News|Updated Aug 23, 2018

RUIDOSO — The New Mexico Racing Commission on Thursday established the order — but no dates — in which it will visit three communities vying for the state’s sixth racino license. Commissioners said they will hear proposals from Lordsburg, Clovis and Tucumcari, in that order. Five groups applied for the racetrack/casino license, which the Racing Commission has said it plans to award before the year ends. Clovis’ Gayla Brumfield, promoting Clovis as a site for the racino, attended Thursday’s NMRC meeting. She said commissione...

Dogs causing neighborhood distress I have lived at 128 Park Drive in Clovis for about a year. All this time, there have been three dogs running all around, terrorizing the neighborhood. I have called animal control every time I see them and they say they cannot catch the dogs. The dogs, which are pit bulls, have been aggressive since day one. They have done damage to a neighbors’ fence and to mine and to my window. I have two dogs that stay outside and I am afraid these loose dogs will attack my dogs. If animal control c...
