  • Clovis to consider employee raises

    Kevin Wilson - Staff|Updated Aug 23, 2019

CLOVIS — Shortly after final budget approval, the city of Clovis generally looks at employee raises. The 2019-20 fiscal year is no exception, as the Clovis City Commission will consider a half-million dollars worth of raises during its Thursday evening meeting. If approved by the commission, most of the city’s 300-plus employees would see a 2.5% increase, effective Sunday. The $502,602 to cover the increases would largely come from the city’s general fund ($392,397), but is spread out among the city’s sanitation, wastewa...

CLOVIS - Police on Monday requested public assistance in locating two suspects in the armed robbery Sunday morning of an elderly woman in a church parking lot. The incident happened around 8:50 a.m., when "an 88 year old female was robbed at gun point in the parking lot of Parkland Baptist Church by two white females," according to a news release from Clovis Police Dept. Lt. Trevor Thron. As a result of further investigation, arrest warrants were generated for Jamie Vega, 36,...

  • Portales goal: Final four, and further

    Kevin Wilson - Staff|Updated Aug 21, 2019

PORTALES — A quick look at Class 4A football in the Land of Enchantment looks like you’re playing a dice game, with four different title winners in each of the last four seasons. The better gambling metaphor, however, would be the World Series of Poker. Whatever cards get dealt, the same people always seem to find their way to the final table. The safest bet for 4A’s final four has been Portales, the only team to make every semifinal round in that time. They’re hoping to make...

  • Rattlers hope to avoid injury bug

    Ron Warnick - Staff Writer|Updated Aug 20, 2019

“I think we will be a decent ballclub if we can stay healthy.” Tucumcari head coach Wayne Ferguson’s thumbnail assessment of his team matches others in the region. Simply put, coaches in Quay County and beyond are struggling to get enough athletes out for football. Ferguson has 31 players on his varsity roster, but he’s seen fewer than 20 show up for practices so far. Because of his lack of skilled players, he felt forced to cancel a scrimmage last week against the Clovis...

  • Rivalry renewed

    Peter Stein-Staff writer|Updated Aug 20, 2019

CLOVIS - You could hear the drumbeats, literally and otherwise. Drum practice underneath the home bleachers of Leon Williams Stadium late Monday afternoon signaled the approach of the Clovis High football team's season opener and first home game. It meant that Week 1 is almost upon the Wildcats and their fans. Hobbs will soon be on its way northward for the grudge match. It won't be long before those Eagles and the 'Cats storm through their respective balloon tunnels. Smoke,...

Albert Flinn's official job title is head rodeo coach for Eastern New Mexico University. This summer, he's also been a trail boss and herd wrangler, searching out "strays" for the upcoming reunion of the school's competitive rodeo teams from 1967 to 1969. Eastern's 2019 College Daze Rodeo, scheduled Sept. 19-21 in Portales, will serve as the roundup corral for the ENMU Rodeo Reunion, with special recognition in store for the members of the 1969 men's national rodeo...

  • I believe betting life on Christ a good wager

    Curtis Shelburne|Updated Aug 20, 2019

“I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. ... I believe in the Holy Spirit ...” Yes, I do. With all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength, I do. Some of you will quickly recognize those words and phrases as coming from what is traditionally known as “The Apostles’ Creed.” The actual words were not written by the apostles, but it is an early and important statement of basic Christian beliefs,...

  • Clovis optimistic despite brutal schedule

    Peter Stein - Staff Writer|Updated Aug 20, 2019

CLOVIS — The night of Nov. 2, 2018 might be one the Clovis High football team may want to remember as among its best of last season. It was a game the Wildcats lost 10-7. Huh? Yes, the ’Cats did lose their final regular-season game and missed out on handing La Cueva its first loss of the season. Instead, the Bears prevailed and went on to become undefeated state 6A champions while Clovis was one-and-done in the playoffs and wound up 4-7. The Wildcats, though, were not onl...

  • Water authority to move ahead with construction

the Staff of The News|Updated Aug 20, 2019

CLOVIS — The board of the Eastern New Mexico Water Utility Authority meets Thursday afternoon in Clovis, moving ahead with work on pipeline construction funding as smaller member entities make moves to withdraw from the organization. The agenda is slim for the 3 p.m. meeting at Clovis’ Sitterly Professional Center, with only three items under new business: a budget adjustment resolution for fiscal year 2020, a funding application to the New Mexico Water Trust Board and a report from ENMWUA administrator Orlando Ortega on the...

  • Law repeals Compulsory School Attendance act

    David Grieder - Staff|Updated Aug 20, 2019

CLOVIS — School attendance legislation signed this year by the governor came as a surprise and disappointment last week to the 9th Judicial District Attorney, whose office has campaigned over past semesters to meet problem truancy cases with criminal charges. “It just literally took out the whole part about it being referred to the District Attorney office,” Andrea Reeb told The News on Monday. “It repealed the Compulsory School Attendance act, and it took out any option after juvenile probation works with them.” House Bil...

  • Teachers offer advice for parents

    Cindy Kleyn-Kennedy|Updated Aug 20, 2019

Despite the many long hours teachers spend with students on a daily basis, studies show the parent is still the first teacher and most important influencer in a child’s life. If parents value education, students will value education and strive harder for success than if parents are uninvolved or disconnected. Heading into a new school year, we decided it would be useful to check in with teachers for the best advice they might offer parents to optimally support their c...

  • Pets can literally save our lives

    Tom McDonald|Updated Aug 20, 2019

I have a dog in the house. He doesn’t live here, he just came to visit. And I have a family of feral cats living in my back yard. The momma cat claimed squatters rights, having lived here before I moved in. She’s always around, living her feral life just outside my reach. And, yes, I fed her, so now she owns me, as do her three almost-grown kittens. I had a plan for the momma cat first. A spay-neuter clinic was coming to town, so I reserved a spot and started planning her capture. I coaxed the kittens with cat food into a b...

  • Campaign finance changes may polarize

    Updated Aug 20, 2019

For years, transparency advocates have been raising hue and cry for campaign finance reform that generally accomplishes two goals: First, reform should create an environment where the person or group with the biggest piggybank isn’t the de facto winner. And second, voters should be able to find out where campaign money is coming from so they can have a clear picture of who is propping up what. New campaign rules in New Mexico hit the second mark, but unfortunately miss the first by about a mile. According to an Associated P...

  • Learning new things challenges you

    Kent McManigal|Updated Aug 20, 2019

Usually, the more I learn about something the more I appreciate it. There have been many times when a friend has introduced me to something I knew next to nothing about; something they were enthusiastic for, and before long I had gained a new appreciation. It doesn’t necessarily mean it becomes something I’m seriously interested in, but I can still appreciate it through new eyes. Recently I was introduced to the history of the Three Stooges by a friend who runs the int...

On this date ... 1939: John Sparks, the son of Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Sparks, had learned a valuable lesson about riding his bike alongside a car. The boy was riding to the Portales swimming pool alongside a car driven by his friend Billie Kenyon when the bicycle “dumped him underneath the car,” according to the Portales Daily News. “His arm was run over,” the paper reported. Fortunately, both boys were Boy Scouts and they used their first-aid skills to stop the flow of blood from John’s arm. He was rushed to the Portales...

  • Cat tests positive for rabies

the Staff of The News|Updated Aug 20, 2019

SANTA FE — The New Mexico Department of Health on Tuesday reported a cat as the first domestic animal this year to test positive for rabies in Roosevelt County. The department has previously confirmed positive rabies tests in seven wild animals, six of them skunks, in Curry and Roosevelt counties. The cat in question developed weakness in its hind legs and bit a person last week. That person received post-exposure medical treatment, according to a DOH news release. “It’s important pet owners remember that there are wild...

  • Business feature: Shop serving slow-cooked BBQ

    Mathew Brock - Staff|Updated Aug 20, 2019

CLOVIS - From a building in Farwell to a mobile trailer, and now into a building in Clovis, slow-cooked meats have found their way west. A decade after it started up in Farwell as a Thursday-only establishment, The BBQ Shop has made its way to the 600 block of Pile Street in Clovis, combining a food truck with a former office building renovated for seating. With their main restaurant located in Farwell, Steve and Rita Perry expanded the family business last October with a mobi...

  • ENMU trying to obtain license to serve liquor

    David Grieder - Staff|Updated Aug 20, 2019

PORTALES — Start drafting your toasts, because Eastern New Mexico University is in the process of obtaining a license to serve liquor for events at select locations on campus. It’s not for selling beer at football games, nor is there a pub or any other dedicated establishment moving into the domain of the Green & Silver. University officials said they mainly wanted to expand the range of places where people around Portales could hold special events where alcohol is served. On campus, that’s currently restricted to funct...
