The Staff of The News|Updated Aug 22, 2019

RICHARDSON, Texas — It’s a larger Lone Star Conference, but Eastern New Mexico’s volleyball team is still picked in 2019 to finish as it did in 2018 — just sneaking into the postseason tournament. The Greyhounds were slotted fifth in the LSC preseason poll, which drew 45 ballots from LSC head coaches, sports information directors and media representatives throughout Division II’s largest conference. There’s a familiar face at the top in Tarleton State, which took 39 of the 45 first-place votes after going 32-5 last year a...

  • Rams hit road Saturday to face Huskies

The Staff of The News|Updated Aug 22, 2019

PORTALES - When the Portales Rams hosted the Hope Christian Huskies in 2018, it was a clash of two title contenders in their respective classes - the Rams in 4A and the visiting Huskies in 3A. Months after the dust had settled on that 10-3 overtime win by Hope Christian, both teams were in fact right in the title hunt with the Huskies falling to Robertson in the 3A semifinals and Portales losing to eventual 4A champion Taos in the final four. The paths, however, were far different. That win by Hope was a catalyst to a...

The Greyhounds were picked fifth in the LSC men's soccer poll, released Tuesday morning by the league office. This is the first time since the 2012 season the LSC has fielded men's soccer as a sport. Though it seems like they just hung up the cleats last week, a new high school football season gets going again for several area teams this weekend. Among them, 2018 Six-man state finalist Elida hosts Lake Arthur in a historic Friday-night game — the Tigers’ first-ever under the lights. ’18 Eight-man state semifinalist Melrose travels to Menaul High School in Albuquerque to play Dulce on a neutral field. And Texico begins the Bob Gilbreath era with a road game at Jal. Exciting weekend. Here’s the lowdown. Lake Arthur at Elid...

    Peter Stein-Staff writer|Updated Aug 20, 2019

CLOVIS - Clovis' girls soccer team came oh so close to extending its 2018 season. And when the Lady Wildcats lost to Eldorado, a 1-0 heartbreaker in the 99th minute of overtime play in the state 5A tournament's first round, the Clovis players who knew they would return were left wanting more. They may get it this year with one of their main goalies back, plus two of their most electric scoring threats also returning. So as Traci Sievers begins her ninth season coaching Clovis...

  • My parents still inspire me in their 80s

    Carrie Classon|Updated Aug 20, 2019

I spent the last couple of weeks visiting my parents. I’ve been lucky in the parent department. It’s fashionable to recall some pivotal incident that occurred when we were 8 and extrapolate how every difficulty experienced in our life since is a result. But I’ve never seen any truth to this in my own life. I was really happy when I was 8 — and I give my parents full credit. My life is different from my parents’ life. Still, they have always been supportive and have always at least pretended to be interested in whatever...
