  • Editorial: Public stampede to name bison U.S. mammal

    McCook Neb Daily Gazette

I t's easy to think of things more important for Congress to do than designate a U.S. National Mammal, but McCook, Neb., residents should take more than a passing interest in a proposal that is gaining speed. Make that, as proponents describe it, turning into a stampede. U.S. Rep. Jeff Fortenberry and Sen. Mike Johanns of Nebraska, as well as 17 senators and four representatives from Wyoming, South Dakota, Colorado, the Dakotas, Missouri, New Mexico and even as far as New York, Ohio, Hawaii and Connecticut are sponsoring the... Full story

The Clovis High boys soccer team split a pair of 3-2 decisions with District 4-5A rival Hobbs last year, each team winning on the road. The district championship thus came down to who had a bigger goal margin against last-place Carlsbad, and the Wildcats fell a little short. Dave Wagner CMI sports writer

The Portales Rams fell just short in their bid for the school's first state soccer title last fall. Coach Brian Kirchner said, all the same, losing in the finals won't change the way his team is perceived this season. The Rams will still have a big target on their backs. "Everybody will be gunning for us," said Kirchner, beginning his third season as head coach and fifth in the program. "We weren't the state champs, but teams will still want to take us down. • Shelburne: Keeping still gives renewed direction and meaning and energy

    Curtis K Shelburne CMI columnist

Has our Father ever asked us to do anything that we fail at more spectacularly than this simple command? For a long time, I didn't know these words were from Psalm 46. But I knew them. During all my growing up years, my mom papered the wall around our bathroom sink and medicine cabinet with inspirational clippings thumb-tacked into prominence. No wonder four of us became pastors. We'd never brushed our teeth without receiving an unspoken sermon in the process. The clipping I've always remembered best was a yellowed and...

  • Schools focusing on attendance

    Alisa Boswell

One of the main focuses for Portales High School faculty this school year is keeping students from missing class time, according to Principal Melvin Nusser. Alisa Boswell: Portales News-Tribune Portales High School officials are saying they are preparing to "crack down" on the issue of high school students missing school by educating parents and students and making teachers more directly involved with the issue through a student/teacher mentoring program and by visiting homes. "There's nothing that holds the kid accountable...

  • Shelburne: Genuine faith never comes easily or cheaply

    Curtis Shelburne CMI columnist

Some things just can't be rushed. No matter how badly you want it, you'll not be able to enjoy the shade from a 75-year-old oak tree unless someone 75 years ago took the trouble and had the foresight to plant it. Strong faith is much like that old oak tree (and I think it was the late Wes Reagan, well-respected pastor and mentor, who I first heard use this good analogy). Lots of us want the blessings and the stability that can come during life's storms only through a deep and abiding faith. I want those blessings, too. But I...

  • My turn: Fair week full of family fun

    Sandy Fields CMI columnist

There are so many things to be learned at the Roosevelt County Fair. I'll share a few of my observations from previous years. Everyone looks good in a cowboy hat! Try one on sometime. If you're showing your pig and he poops … just whip a rag out of your hip pocket, clean his rump, put that rag back in your pocket, and keep your eye on the prize. There's a ribbon out there with your name on it. You're never too young or too old to don a fancy, frilly skirt and do some square dancing. Toddlers will always love carousel h...
