  • Officials: Haze from western states wildfires

The Staff of The News|Updated Aug 20, 2018

The haze over eastern New Mexico today is not just cloudcover. Dan Heerding, emergency management director for the city of Clovis, said we’re seeing wildfire smoke from California and other western states. “There’s nothing burning here that we know about,” Heerding said. There’s also nothing to worry about locally, according to Heerding and air-quality control officials. “I’m looking at the state website for air quality monitoring and everything is green (meaning good air quality) with the exception of ... Las Cruces,” he s... Full story

  • It's fair time in Roosevelt County

    Jamie Cushman|Updated Aug 20, 2018

PORTALES — The Roosevelt County Fair kicks off Tuesday for six days of family fun. But Fair Board President Wayne McAlister wants people to know this won’t be your grandfather’s county fair. “This is not the same county fair it’s always been,” McAlister said. “We’ve put a lot of work into this fair and we’re changing some things up trying to make it more appealing to a broader set of people and we feel real good about the show that we’ve got coming.” McAlister listed off a host of changes to the fair this year, including...

  • Fifty years ago: 'Burglar Murders Portales Druggist'

    Betty Williamson|Updated Aug 19, 2018

Fifty years ago today, many people in eastern New Mexico were still reeling as the news continued to spread about a murder that had rattled Portales late the evening before. Elbert Lee Muncy, a beloved pharmacist who had worked for a decade at B and J Drug on the square in Portales, had been killed by multiple gunshots. Officials said he had returned to the pharmacy after hours on a warm Sunday evening and interrupted a robbery in progress. The 16-inch wide banner headline in... Full story

  • Life's loves: Traveling, decorating, painting

    Shane Grah|Updated Aug 19, 2018

About myself ... Well, my name is Shane Grah, and I was born at Cannon AFB. My loves in life are traveling, decorating and painting. I also have a thing for Trans Ams. I'm a chalk painting maniac, Annie Sloan stockist and lover of all things antique and vintage — especially Art Deco. I have a store here in Clovis on Main St. called Prairie Roads JunQtique; it's actually only five doors down from my mom's store, Penny Lane. Antiques have always been a staple in my life, my f...

  • Migrants just striving for better lives

    Wendel Sloan|Updated Aug 19, 2018

I have been volunteering with the Workers Defense Project (WDP) in Dallas. The membership-based organization empowers low-income workers to “achieve fair employment through education, direct services, organizing and strategic partnerships.” Recently, I attended a Dallas City Council meeting as a WDP photographer. About 20 members from various organizations attended to support sick pay for low-wage workers who work sick or don’t get paid. One presenter explained sick leave was...

  • No place for alleged crook Ross on Cabinet

    St. Louis Post-Dispatch|Updated Aug 19, 2018

President Donald Trump defines himself by the people who surround him, especially the top advisers he picks to run his administration — people he described in early 2016 as “the best and most serious people” and “top of the line professionals.” When it comes to pronouncing on their ability to abide by the law and remain corruption-free, however, Trump falls eerily silent or resorts to blaming the scandals plaguing his administration on “fake news.” Norman Ornstein of the conservative American Enterprise Institute in...

  • Smoothie diet taking over at home

    Karl Terry|Updated Aug 19, 2018

What you want in yours today? It’s become a pretty common question these days around our house. Unfortunately the question isn’t referring to omelets or ice cream sundaes. No, we’re trying to diet by employing smoothies in place of meals and desserts. I used a popular nutrition that relies on shakes as the main element to lose a good deal of weight a few years ago. My wife didn’t care for it as much. It took a while but I slowly fell off the wagon of that two-shake a-day r...

PORTALES — Eastern New Mexico University officials want people to rethink the concept of a library. For starters, the $26 million renovated Golden Library will now be known as the Golden Student Success Center (GSSC). A grand opening is set for 5 p.m. on Aug. 28 to show off the new facility, which Jeff Elwell, president of the Portales campus and chancellor of ENMU's three-campus system, said he hopes will become the new hub of activity. "The hope is that unlike nowadays w...

  • Fair sale pays out

    Jamie Cushman|Updated Aug 19, 2018

CLOVIS — About 100 area youth left the Curry County Fair on Friday with some extra cash in their bank account following the annual Junior Livestock Sale in which animals raised by 4-H and Future Farmers of America students were auctioned. Curry County Extension Agent Janelle Duffey said Friday night's sale brought in $301,600, not including add-on dollars from sponsors, falling short of last year's total of $370,000. That marks the second straight year the total money spent h...

  • Letter to the editor - Aug. 19

    Updated Aug 18, 2018

If you want a call back, make it easy to reach you Several times recently I have placed ads in the newspaper, giving a phone number as a way for people to contact me. Some of those who tried to contact me may be disappointed and wondering why they have had no return call. This may be because I have been unable to return their calls. The reasons are simple — there seems to be a lack of awareness of how to communicate effectively over the phone. Consider the following examples of messages left on the answering machine: • peo... Full story

  • Clovis soccer teams take openers at Lovington

The Staff of The News|Updated Aug 18, 2018

LOVINGTON — For the Clovis boys soccer team, it was a long offseason. After a 2017 campaign that saw the Wildcats denied a state tournament berth, the returning players had to wait for another chance to make a postseason run, and the first step in that direction came Saturday when they opened their 2018 season at Lovington and came away with a 3-1 victory. One win down, and they hope many more to go. “We’re looking to get better every time, improve every time we play,...

  • Smith homes to turn around Hound program

    Eric Murray|Updated Aug 18, 2018

PORTALES — Some coaches have that special ability to turn around any and every program that they get their hands on. New Eastern New Mexico women’s soccer coach Joshua Smith is no stranger to that concept. Smith was named the sixth Greyhounds women’s soccer coach back on June 21. The New Jersey-native has already turned around three programs thus far, and hopes that ENMU is no exception. Smith, who previously spent the past two years as the coach of the University of the Southwest’s women’s program, had plenty of good reas...
