  • Cats cautiously optimistic for soccer season

    Kevin Wilson|Updated Aug 17, 2018

CLOVIS — With a new district alignment comes a new optimism for the Clovis boys soccer team. But there’s also an understandable amount of urgency. The Wildcats, who didn’t get much in the way of official workouts heading into today’s season opener at Lovington, enter the season figuring they’re going to have to end the season as the District 4-5A champion to know they’re making the state tournament field. “I think you almost have to win (district) to get in,” Clovis coach Greg...

    Jamie Cushman|Updated Aug 17, 2018

CLOVIS — Senior Marissa Cabrera, the student-body president at Clovis High School, said she wanted to create a fun event for her classmates to take photos and set a tradition for the years to come. Critics are saying students' plans will be having an adverse effect on the environment. • Area school grade results split

    Jamie Cushman|Updated Aug 17, 2018

New Mexico Public Education Department scores for 2017-18 show mixed results for eastern New Mexico — 11 schools saw their letter grades go down while eight saw them rise. Area administrators expressed their belief that what is shown in that one letter grade does not truly reflect performance at those schools. In Portales, four of the district’s six schools saw their scores drop a letter grade from the previous school year. “Well you know, it’s kind of a mixed reaction of how we did because I don’t think in any ways thes... Full story

CLOVIS — Eastern New Mexico is still all-in as the contest for the state’s sixth racino license narrows, but the area’s competition was still unclear immediately after the application deadline Friday afternoon. Representatives of the New Mexico Racing Commission said they would confirm by next week the complete list of those to submit their applications by close of day on Friday. A total of 11 groups submitted this month their “letters of intent” to apply; not all of them made it in time, but The News confirmed Friday th...

  • Rams stingy from the start

The Staff of The News|Updated Aug 17, 2018

PORTALES — It was a dominant performance for the Portales Rams during Friday night’s scrimmages at their high school practice field. Portales shut out both Robertson and Texico, as both sides of the ball looked strong, just one week before the season-opener against Hope Christian. “To tell you the truth, we just wanted to evaluate talent and see who was gonna step up and play,” Rams coach Jaime Ramirez said. “I thought all of our boys stepped up, played good. We got to evaluat...
