  • Render: Payment to Iran a ransom, period

Some circumstantial evidence is strong, like when you see a turtle sitting on a fence post; it never occurs to you that the turtle climbed that post. In politics, the optics are everything. Rube Render For instance if you take 400 million U.S. dollars and convert it into euros, Swiss francs and various other currencies, put it on pallets and cover it with shrink wrap, load it into an unmarked aircraft for delivery to a government that has been detaining four U.S. citizens...

  • Faith: Kids today know their logos

    Helena Rodriguez

Religion columnist Almost every child knows the jingly “Alphabet Song” even before they start school. My two-and-a-half-year-old granddaughter, Genavecia, already knows that song. Kids know their ABCs. As I recently discovered, though, they also know their logos, sometimes even better than their ABCs. When my hijada (Goddaughter), Stephanie, was a pre-schooler learning her ABCs, when she saw the letter “M,” she excitedly exclaimed, “McDonald’s!” That was a classic moment in my memory. Fast forward about 15 years to now.... Full story

  • Shelburne: Worth knowing how little we know

    Curtis Shelburne

Not long ago, one of my favorite columnists, George Will, wrote a column about his favorite columnist, William Zinsser. Zinsser died last year at the age of 92, an amazingly accomplished writer, editor, and teacher. He was literally the man who wrote the book on writing well. On Writing Well has sold over 1.5 million copies. If Will liked Zinsser, I figured I would, too. But I was sure of it after I read Zinsser’s essay on “postmodernism” (in a fine collection of his essay... Full story

  • Brown: Fair a wonder to a farm kid

I can’t say what the county fair looks like to anyone else, but I can share the perspective on farm kid. The fair was a wonder and an event, of that there is no doubt. It came around once a year, at a time when hot and monotonous are common modifiers for what I’d been doing for the last few months. It comes at a time when the farm and the ranch is plenty busy, but the fair was a big enough reason to take a few hours off. (And that alone makes it pretty exciting to a farm kid...
