  • The thrill and the truth of Aretha Franklin

    The Associated Press|Updated Aug 16, 2018

NEW YORK - The clarity and the command. The daring and the discipline. The thrill of her voice and the truth of her emotions. Like the best actors and poets, nothing came between how Aretha Franklin felt and what she could express, between what she expressed and how we responded. • Whatever God's name, his emphasis is on love

    Curtis Shelburne|Updated Aug 16, 2018

A good commercial can be a lot of fun. I’m thinking about the TV sort. You know — cave men, lizards with British accents. That sort of thing. But I am full to overflowing (yea, verily, to nausea) with two other TV ad-types — those pumped out by slime-oozing lawyers and those peddled by drug pushers. Let’s tackle the latter. I am very thankful indeed for the availability of needed medications that make our lives much better. But whatever side of the political spectrum you fin...

    Judy Brandon|Updated Aug 16, 2018

Last week I was reading about Great Britain’s royal family. Through the years I have followed royal weddings, royal babies, royal funerals and all the pomp that comes with those events. It is apparent that just being born into the British royal family brings not only an instant elite position but also an abundance of expensive possessions. As far as position, Queen Elizabeth is the head of the Church of England and represents Britain when the nation is going through tragedy o...
