  • Important to visit family

I got lost finding my uncle and aunt’s house. Yes, it was that simple. I was going to visit my Uncle Mel and Aunt Joann, on my recent trip back to western Pennsylvania and I got lost. They live on a state route which connects Butler County and Beaver County, and I became confused because I could not recall the route number. There are, in that area of small towns, many such state routes. Landmarks, which usually do not fail me, did not do me very much good. I knew that I needed to place the creek on my right. I also knew t...

  • Party lines Facebook of my time

They called them party lines way back when. Today when I mention a party line most people under 40 would think I was talking about one of those 1-900 numbers where women talk dirty to you. Occasio-nally someone on the party line would talk dirty to you but it was just because you were interrupting their conversation and the dirty talk was a cussin’. Party lines were still in wide use in the rural areas of eastern New Mexico when I was growing up. On a party line you could be sharing the same phone line with as many as four o...

  • Big government leads to abuse of political funds

Freedom New Mexico The freedom to influence and support political candidates by contributing money in election campaigns is under attack. Many, including the Freedom New Mexico, are bothered, and should be, by the disproportionate influence of big money in political campaigns. The problem spans the political spectrum. But the solution isn’t to infringe on constitutional rights. The best solution is to reduce government involvement in our lives, which will reduce how much special interests and anyone else stand to gain from g...

  • Letter to the editor: Government can’t fund everything

    Sharna Johnson

Government can’t fund everything It was a blessing to read a great article in the Aug. 7 paper written by Sharna Johnson: “Hotel Clovis redevelopment still possible.” We citizens dislike government’s excessive spending of our tax money collected for frivolous projects that private contractors can provide more effectively. Government cannot fund all of our family needs. Only Holy God has that power. This is the same problem caused by our U.S. president and our Congres... Full story

  • Only fair to do verifications locally

Enough is enough! And I am not talking about the nearly catastrophic Tea Party Takedown of America. No, reference here is to the abuse I must take from certain readers of this fair and balanced column. Check this email response to a fair, balanced column that said, in effect, that Governor Susana Martinez is crazy as a bedbug for trying to repeal a law that allows illegal immigrants the driver licenses they need in order to function in our state. Ned, What part of “ILLEGAL ALIEN “doesn’t your itty, bitty, tiny, little liber...

  • Letter to the editor: Tax cuts only add to federal debt

Tax cuts only add to federal debt How outrageous conservatives are. They stood on principal refusing to negotiate on raising the debt ceiling, wanting the nation to default on its debt in the name of reducing entitlements while preserving the status quo for the wealthy and corporations. Now that the predicted has happened and our credit rating was lowered by one credit rating agency, conservatives, in cacophonous unity, cry for U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner’s resignation. It’s his fault they say. Never mind tha...

Samplings of recent calls to Portales law enforcement, according to police reports: Wednesday • An officer was sent to the 800 block of East First Street about 8:30 p.m. in reference to a report of a dangerous dog. A 40-year-old woman said her husband went outside because he heard their dog barking and saw a large, black dog attacking their dog. The officer saw the couple’s dog tied up, with blood on its face and right ear. The yard was partially fenced, and the woman said she and her husband didn’t have a way to fin...

  • Horse welfare on decline

The road to increased horse abandonment and abuse is paved with good intentions. The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) has recently (June 2011) finished its report on the current status of horse welfare in the U.S. titled “Action Needed to Address Unintended Consequences from Cessation of Domestic Slaughter.” The GAO is the equivalent of the person who inspects the Boeing 737 you ride on, or the IRS going over your books, or the instant replay in football. It is as cold as a calculator. It does not factor in emo...

  • Old-Timer Days draws young, old alike

    Kevin Wilson

CNJ staff photo: Kevin Wilson John Gorley of Melrose tosses candy from his tractor seat during the Melrose Old Timers Day parade Saturday morning. The Melrose Old-Timer Days mean the same thing for most participants, whether they left the eastern New Mexico village, stayed there or figured out something in between. The event, held this weekend for the 60th time in some fashion, joined the young and the old to reminisce about their childhood (and for some, current) hometown. “It’s the highlight of the year,” said Delor...
