  • Unbeaten Cougars coast past Lady Cats

Staff report ALBUQUERQUE — It didn’t take Clovis High’s girls long on Friday night to find out that defending Class 6A state champion Cibola, which much of its squad back from last season, is still good and a major threat to repeat. The Cougars strolled to an 18-3 lead at the quarter and not much changed the rest of the way in a 71-22 victory over the Lady Wildcats. Clovis, which beat Cibola at The Rock last season en route to a 27-3 campaign that ended in the 6A state semifinals, was no match for the unbeaten Cougars...

  • Tritons collect 106-87 victory over Hounds

Staff report ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — So far on its swing through the Sunshine State, Eastern New Mexico University’s men have certainly put up enough points to be successful. The problem has been getting stops against some pretty solid opposition. After losing at defending NCAA Division II national champion Florida Southern 100-90 on Thursday, ENMU gave up a season high in points for the second game in a row in Saturday’s 106-87 loss to Eckerd College in the Tampa Classic. The contest, originally scheduled for Tampa as p...

  • Lady Cats earn win at Sandia

Staff report ALBUQUERQUE — One day after a 49-point loss at defending Class 6A state champion Cibola, Clovis High’s girls made a nice bounce-back in their final game for a little while. Junior post Monay Phillips scored a career-best 14 points to pace three Lady Wildcats in double figures in a 48-41 victory over Sandia, a game Clovis led virtually all the way. Sophomore post Mimi Coleman finished with 13 points — including 11 in the second half — while sophomore guard Teya Morris chipped in 10 for the Lady Cats...

  • Staff writer [email protected] City Commissioner Randal Crowder opposes the opening of Twin Arrow Bingo because it will include gaming machines and could compete for customers with Crowder’s own gambling interests. At least that’s how Twin Arrow owner Rocky Bernard sees the situation. The accusation is ridiculous, according to Crowder. He says his minority ownership in land that has an option to maybe one day become a race track and casino was not a factor in his voting to deny a beer and wine license for Twin Arrow... Full story

  • Empty stocking fund profile — Dec. 20

A single Clovis father with four children recently learned he has diabetes. He’d been sick for some time, but he didn’t have health insurance and was delayed in being able to see a doctor. “With the loss of work time and medical bills, he is unable to buy gifts for his children this Christmas,” said Salvation Army Lt. Kelly Berggren. The man and his family are among about two dozen who have qualified to receive holiday help from the Empty Stocking Fund, sponsored by the Clovis News Journal and Salvation Army. The...

  • Holiday traditions as varied as residents

    Alisa Boswell

Staff photo: Jackie Johnson Gaynelle Thomas arranges ornaments on her family’s Lego-themed Christmas tree Friday afternoon in her house. Thomas said one of her family traditions is picking a theme each year, which they incorporate into holiday decorations. Staff writer [email protected] Whether it’s setting out milk and cookies for Santa, popping in “It’s a Wonderful Life” or picking out a gift from under the tree to open on Christmas Eve, every family has a...

  • New mother thankful for holiday with child

Staff report Although it will be a different kind of first Christmas than she imagined for her daughter, Riley Lewis is just thankful to be able to spend the holiday with her daughter at all. Lewis was 24 years old and 17 weeks pregnant with daughter Bryelle when she was diagnosed with colon cancer in January. “I was having pain in my lower abdomen, and the doctors had told me that it was just from the baby growing,” Lewis said. “One day, I finally went into the emergency room, and they saw what they thought was a...

  • Needed reminder of blessings in life

    Alisa Boswell

Managing Editor It was Thanksgiving Day, and it seemed like everyone in the world was in a festive mood as they talked and posted on Facebook about their turkeys and how wonderful it was to be away from work and to be with family. And there I was — on my 11th consecutive day of work with no day off, having averaged 14 hours per day the previous three days. You may have all noticed I haven’t had a column run the last three Sundays. I have felt little inspiration to share anecdotes or to say anything witty as of late — OK... Full story

  • Wilson: Worst, best Christmas? Same year

    Kevin Wilson

A question I ask, and get asked, every year seems to be, “What was the best Christmas you remember?” We never ask, “What’s your worst Christmas?” My best Christmas and worst Christmas are pretty easy memories, because they happened in the same year. Kevin Wilson First off, a defense of my family, and myself. Of the things I inherited from my father, one of them was gift-destroying self-reliance. If I see something I need, and I need it more than the money in my bank... Full story

  • Sloan: Dear friends, it's been a tough one

Wendel’s Christmas newsletter: • January — I went skiing in Ruidoso for the first time since the Cold War. My skill had not gone downhill, but the Texans had. Overheard: “W” was the best president since Harrison Ford; Trump has the smoking gun Obama used in a Kenyan training camp; Ted Cruz invented cruise missiles. • Poor governing culprit of nuke waste site woes

Getting the shuttered Waste Isolation Pilot Plant back to full operation anytime in the near future looks dubious, with missed deadlines attributable to the usual culprits — ineptness and bungling. Operations at WIPP, the nation’s only underground repository for mixed radioactive waste from Cold War-era nuclear weapons work, have been curtailed and the site closed to shipments after two accidents in February 2014 — an underground truck fire and a radiation leak at the site near Carlsbad. Investigations found lax... Full story
