  • Thank you, Richard Allen Trask, for dedication and service

    Patti Dobson|Updated Aug 6, 2019

Recently, I had the distinct privilege to officiate the celebration of life service for Richard Allen Trask, who was 99 and some when he died. As I listened to the stories shared by his son and daughter-in-law Rick and Kathi Trask, I was struck by the sheer tenacity and strength of will he had. I cannot imagine all that he had to endure. Like many of us, I’ve read about the Bataan Death March. It is one thing to read about it; it is quite another to live it and survive it. And...

  • God's greatest miracle a single, perfect Word

    Curtis Shelburne|Updated Aug 6, 2019

Hey, friends, I’ve got a favor to ask. Like, if you, like, catch me using, like “like” in a sentence or, like, even in a phrase, like, I’ve thus far used “like” in this sentence five senseless and indefensible times, please, please — I’m begging you — slap me hard across the face. And the sooner, the better, before the worm digs into my brain’s neurons and embeds itself so deeply that it can’t be removed. I feel almost the same about, uh, “uh.” I suppose we all use, and c...

  • Box of letters full of memories and surprises

    Carrie Classon|Updated Aug 6, 2019

The surprises just kept coming. When I moved in with Peter a few years back, I brought my clothes, a few books, and some artwork. I rented out my house, gave away my furniture, and everything else was consigned to “things I’ll deal with later,” a pile which — mysteriously — did not shrink with time. These stacked plastic boxes were still in my barn, still waiting for me, long after I’d forgotten what was in them or cared. But I am going to put the property up for sale and it was time for a reckoning with the barn. It to...

  • August history warns: Beware of robbers

    David Stevens - Staff|Updated Aug 6, 2019

I collect historical tidbits that interest me from area newspapers. Here are a few from the first week of Augusts past: • Aug. 1, 1901: The first Portales newspaper, The Progress, began weekly publication. The Portales Herald followed in 1902, just before the Portales Times launched and eventually merged with the Herald. • Aug. 1, 1923: The U.S Post Office announced it would begin providing city mail delivery in Clovis. The city’s population had grown to more than 5,000 in fewer than two decades. • Aug. 1, 1967: A Tucumca...

  • Fairs celebrate best things about rural communities

    Betty Williamson|Updated Aug 6, 2019

I was at a concert outside the Lea County Museum in Lovington last week, enjoying a balmy evening and some good tunes. As the sun set and the evening thankfully began to cool off, multi-colored neon lights started to wink on a few blocks to our east. Although I was puzzled at first, it soon became clear they were the tops of carnival rides, setting up in preparation for the opening of the region’s first county fair this year. If you’re the kind of person who keeps score (an...
