  • Seconds matter in team roping

Julie Bryant CLOVIS — In team roping, seconds can mean thousands of dollars to be won, or lost, and that was the case for more than 200 team ropers who made their way on Saturday to the Curry County Event Center to compete in the United States Team Roping Championships Southwest Regionals. Among them was a pair of ropers who had never roped together before, but on the word of another competitor who knew them both, decided to take a chance. The gamble paid off for the team of Rebecca Neuhaus of Huntsville, Texas and Rex... Full story

  • Dumpsters potential fuel source

At a time when self-righteous environmental groups are trying to block solar power, and self-described green politicians are preventing “Not in my Backyard” wind power, our much maligned real power utilities continue to search for greener fuel options. It is not unusual that the bluster of the often government-subsidized non-profit ANTI’s impede progress through frivolous litigation. Yet the workers in the trenches who furnish us with light, fuel, heat and electricity, soldier on with these parasitic envirosites cling...

  • Only fair to do verifications locally

Enough is enough! And I am not talking about the nearly catastrophic Tea Party Takedown of America. No, reference here is to the abuse I must take from certain readers of this fair and balanced column. Check this email response to a fair, balanced column that said, in effect, that Governor Susana Martinez is crazy as a bedbug for trying to repeal a law that allows illegal immigrants the driver licenses they need in order to function in our state. Ned, What part of “ILLEGAL ALIEN “doesn’t your itty, bitty, tiny, little liber... Full story

  • Our view: Global warming facts may not hold water

A scientific poll shows that 69 percent of Americans believe it is at least “somewhat likely” that scientists falsify data to support their beliefs, of which 40 percent believe it is “very likely.” Only 6 percent believe it’s “not likely at all.” New hard-science global warming data from NASA may back up the cynics. If tornadoes ravage the Great Plains, we are told it’s more evidence of global warming. When wildfires rip through poorly managed forests that are loaded with old fuel, we are told it’s caused by global warming...

  • Singing easy in theory

I like to sing, but surprise me in the shower or rip the headphones from my ears and sometimes it’s not all that pretty. My elementary school teacher, Mrs. Brazzell, tried, bless her heart, but music theory and actual skills never did stick with me. If you handed me a flute-o-phone I still couldn’t play “Mary Had a Little Lamb,” and I can’t tell a clef note from a cleft palate. I do, however, still know how to sing the words to the song “Hukulai,” which she taught us. It was hilarious to see a Facebook post this week abo... Full story

  • Adventure fever strikes again

It is indeed nothing unusual. It happens to me about this time every year, sometimes sooner by a week or two, sometimes later by a week or two, and I have learned to adjust. It will go away, and it is by no means a malady unique to me. If there is such a condition as spring fever, then there must be a name for this condition, too. It is the belief that I will — and indeed, there are no legal impediments to stop me — the belief that I will pack a backpack with 3 pairs of shorts, three T-shirts,one long sleeve...
