CLOVIS — Residents of Clovis, Portales and both Curry and Roosevelt counties are invited to share ideas regarding each entity’s Infrastructure and Capital Improvement Plan (ICIP) during public meetings the next two weeks. The ICIP, in each case, is an annually-revised document to show major projects over the upcoming five years. Projects must fall under the responsibility of local government and not be related to private business. Curry County Manager Lance Pyle said the county uses the top five projects on the ICIP when it s...

Those in attendance at Saturday's tournament enjoyed the competition, c... Full story

  • Q&A: Retiring officer talks life on the job

    David Grieder|Updated Aug 5, 2018

CLOVIS — Three days after his Aug. 1 retirement from 35 years in law enforcement, Mike Reeves sat for an interview in the building of the newspaper where, as a high schooler, he developed pictures as well as a deeper interest in the work of the first responders he photographed. In his hands he gripped a carefully folded small paper bearing both the brand of the Curry County Sheriff Office and his own note, of a month and year significant to his career: August 2008. That's w...

    Betty Williamson|Updated Aug 5, 2018

If you hear the words “science project,” and break out into a cold sweat, well, you’re probably not alone. But some folks at Eastern New Mexico University and the Portales Public Library are kicking off afterschool programs in September designed to share their own expertise and enthusiasm with kids who want to know more about science, technology, engineering, and math (popularly known by the acronym STEM). Although Eastern’s STEM Club is starting its second year, this will be...

    Eric Murray|Updated Aug 4, 2018

PORTALES — The popping of the pads. The pushing of the sled. The chopping of the feet. Yes indeed, high school football is back. No one knows that better than coach Jaime Ramirez and his Portales Rams, who will begin practices Monday morning. And by Monday morning, Ramirez really means early Monday morning. “We’re only gonna have one two-a-day, and that’ll be on Monday. The first practice is Monday at 12:01 a.m. and runs until 2:30 a.m. It’s what we call our ‘Midnight...

  • I draw the line at my breakfast table

    Karl Terry|Updated Aug 4, 2018

I’ve had this burr under my saddle a long time. It’s going to get me in trouble, but when it comes to my own breakfast table, it’s time. I’ve had a little note in my column ideas list for a long time that said “natural foods.” It’s always rankled me how that term gets thrown around carelessly in food labeling, in conversation and in recipes online and on television. Recently, my wife, while justifying the purchase of several little bottles of flavored sweeteners, u...

  • Savor gifts of little moments

    Patti Dobson|Updated Aug 4, 2018

My 4-year-old nephew Gavin picked out my toenail polish. I’m sporting a rather shocking, glaring pink polish. I’ve told people not to look directly at my toes, because they’ll go blind from the glare. Gavin was very proud of his choice; I’m grateful that he moved on from the mustard-yellow-glitter polish, and the speckly purple polish, and the blue with silver flecky-bits polish. It took him a long time to choose. I had to lift him up and go from shelf to shelf, bottle...

  • LeBron, Jordan fans may unite after all

    Kevin Wilson|Updated Aug 4, 2018

There’s nothing worse than when a quick look at a basketball story turns into a LeBron James-Michael Jordan debate. It always gets lost that we’re debating different eras, rules and opponents, and always gets heated. Jordan fans bring up six-for-six, noting Jordan never lost an NBA Finals and never needed to go seven games in the championship round, and his reputation as the greatest scorer in league history. Jordan detractors note James has never lost in the first round, and Jordan did three times. They also note his playoff...

Recently, I attended the Weed Bluegrass Festival in the mountains south of Cloudcroft. Weed’s population of 60 swelled to 500 for the event, including a couple I knew from Elida. Mitch Hibbard, whom I’d interviewed for a preview article about the event for “Enchantment Magazine,” and I met for the first time and visited like old friends. Despite my reputation as a rock-and-roll party animal, I enjoy rock, pop, reggae, country, bluegrass, blues, jazz, zydeco, even a little...

  • Concussion, CTE prevention make NFL safer

    Chicago Tribune|Updated Aug 4, 2018

Last season provided a number of NFL landmarks that remind us why the game is so popular. New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees recorded the highest completion percentage for a single season. Buffalo’s Stephen Hauschka connected on his 13th consecutive field goal of 50 yards or more, which had never been done before. At 40, Tom Brady became the oldest man ever named Most Valuable Player. Another record, however, was a reminder of the serious challenges to the popularity and long-term viability of professional football. In the 2...
