  • Prescription drug misuse could cost airmen

RAMSTEIN AIR BASE, Germany — Sitting in his room with a headache, an airman contemplates whether or not to take pain medication that was prescribed to him for a tooth extraction several months ago. He decides it’s pain medication, and he’s suffering from pain, so there can be no harm. The next day, the airman tests positive in a random drug test. His career now hangs in the balance. People testing positive from misuse of prescription and over-the-counter medication are becoming a common occurrence here and thr...

  • Food at the speed of life: Nutella sandwich makes great dessert

The versatile sandwich can make just as good of a dessert as it does a lunch. I put Nutella, (spreadable chocolate, one the greatest things since the sliced bread you put it on), marshmallow cream and the ever-useful banana in a sandwich. For a small time investment, you get a rich dessert. You may remember a pie with very similar ingredients. Think of the sandwich as the expedited, simplified version of the concept. I can’t claim it’s super healthy, particularly with the calories Nutella adds, but at least it has whole gra...

  • Military mama: School welcome relief

Summer is sputtering to a halt and I’m anxiously counting down the days until school is back in session. I am sure that I am not alone in this sentiment, but if I am I will boldly continue. I am exhausted. Entertaining my 4-year-old is a full-time job with no overtime pay. All summer my son has asked, “Do I got school today?” every day, multiple times a day. Much-needed grammar lessons aside, school offers so many more activities than I can with a baby on each hip. Preschool is only three hours per day, but he adores it. And...
