  • Moms Gear: Make gardening easier with ergonomic gardening tools

Maggie O'Neill It's one thing to work with a commonplace handheld garden trowel, but quite another to use an ergonomically-designed tool. The founder of Radius Garden Tools has created four handheld products that enhance a gardener's digging experience and provide more ease when planting, weeding and cultivating. These tools are curved at the handle — somewhat like an elongated backward 'C' — so as to provide more leverage to the user and to place less stress on the wrist. The green-handled curved tools are...

  • Child Sense: Creating a keepsake of your summer memories

    Priscilla J Dunstan

Summer holidays can seem like they go on forever, and when they end, it's very easy for little kids to forget all the exciting things they did. By creating a memory keepsake, you will be able to help your child remember and also produce a keepsake for years to come. Tactile children will love the concept of a box. It doesn't need to be large, just a box that can be opened and that can hold all the treasures collected over the summer. It could be a shell from the beach, a pebble from the lake at Grandma's, a ribbon from a runn...

  • Building Resilience: Crafting your child's character

McClatchy-Tribune Don't spoil your children. How we'd love to give our children everything they want_they're so darned cute! Here are some thoughts to consider. — Don't worry about spoiling infants when you meet their every need! — If children realize that some people are less fortunate, they are less likely to be demanding. It's important for children to... Full story

Arden Greenspan-Goldberg I am a N.Y.-based licensed psychotherapist with over 30 years of experience and mother of a now-grown daughter — Samara, 22. In order to help moms and daughters from my practice (as well as friends and family), I have come up with tips to help moms cultivate a respectful, strong connection with their daughters and strategies to help moms understand their daughters and learn to rise above. 1. • Walking? Spicy foods? Both among bids to bring on labor

Liza Lester By nine days past her baby's due date last October, Sarah Ikemire was anxious – and speed-walking daily around Sacramento, Calif.'s McKinley Park. She wanted baby Mason to emerge on his own, without urging from drugs or, worse, a Caesarean section. She asked her doctor what she could do to encourage her baby to leave the comforts of the womb. "Have sex, do a lot of walking, and just – think positive and you know, talk to your baby, and maybe he'll be ready to come out," she recalled. Hence the...

  • Frumpy Middle-Aged Mom: Ten things to know before you become Mom

    Marla Jo Fisher

Life would have been easier if I had known these things before I had children: 1. It's pointless to buy nice furniture It's so much easier to just get cheap stuff than to spend your life hollering and frantically running around trying to clean up messes. My children are active _ OK rambunctious _ and the list of damage over the years has been extensive. One couch even suffered a broken back from a boy who kept leaping over it like Superman. My living room couch and chair right now are quite nice looking, even though I bought...

  • In defense of a crowded closet

    Aisha Sultan

My ambitious clothing audit began with an impulse to purge. It was getting harder to pull garments in and out of a packed closet, in which tops pressed up against dress shirts, which nudged jackets into a dark corner. I decided to catalogue each item taking up precious space by color, age, style and how much I enjoyed wearing it. It forced me to take inventory of how much overlap and waste lurked inside. My neurotic exercise prompted our fashion editor, Debra Bass, to invite readers to share their own closet confessions....

  • Wisdom of older generation fading

Oliver Goldsmith (1726-1774) wrote, “I love everything that’s old: old friends, old times, old manners, old books, old wines.” I think he was onto something. Of course, the fact I’m getting older couldn’t have anything to do with my opinion — could it? When you think about it, old age has many superior qualities young life can’t match. An older cow seldom needs assistance birthing a calf, an older horse makes life easier for his rider because he “knows cows,” and a seasoned hunting dog knows not to chase after a rabbit...
