    David Grieder|Updated Aug 1, 2018

  • Urlacher speaks from the heart

    David Haugh, Chicago Tribune|Updated Jul 31, 2018

Two speeches sit on the tip of Brian Urlacher's tongue. One is 17 minutes long, the other eight. One thanks as many people as possible who helped Urlacher along a remarkable football odyssey from tiny Lovington, N.M., through Chicago, to Canton, Ohio. The other compresses those thank-yous more concisely and gets Urlacher off the stage as quickly as possible, as the former Bears linebacker typically prefers. Which speech Urlacher decides to use Saturday when he gets inducted... Full story

  • New tariffs nothing to cheer about

    Kent McManigal|Updated Jul 31, 2018

Some American workers are cheering President Trump’s new tariffs. They know not what they cheer. Tariffs are as bad for you and me — economically — as taxing corporations. It’s a great plan — if your goal is to economically cripple America. No one who truly understands economics would ever try to make the case otherwise. When you tax a corporation, it never pays a cent of the tax, but passes the expense along to the final consumers — you and me. A tariff is a hidden tax,... Full story

After a recent Insurance Services Office review, the Pleasant Hill Volunteer Fire Department’s rating has improved two points — from Class 9 to Class 7 — because of an improved “structural fire suppression delivery system,” according to Fire and Safety Director David Kube. • China's power move on Taiwan political bullying

    Updated Jul 31, 2018

We’re searching for a description of the Chinese government’s behavior and can’t decide among bullying, extortion or coercion. The White House went with “Orwellian nonsense.” Geopolitical chutzpah also comes to mind. What Beijing did was demand that international airlines — including United, American and Delta — change their websites to pretend Taipei is no longer the capital of Taiwan. Because China claims Taiwan as Chinese territory, it doesn’t want to see any references contradicting that assertion. Therefore, book...
