  • Nation loses 'great citizen' in Hope

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Bob Hope, ski jump-nosed master of the one-liner and favorite comedian of servicemen and presidents alike, has died, just two months after turning 100. Hope died late Sunday of pneumonia at his home in Toluca Lake, with his family at his bedside, longtime publicist Ward Grant said Monday. The nation’s most-honored comedian, Hope was a star in every category open to him — vaudeville, radio, television and film, most notably a string of ‘‘Road’’ movies with longtime friend Bing Crosby. For decades, he t... Full story

  • Readers applaud photos made public

A recent Project: Reader Reaction question asked if the U.S. government should have released the graphic photos of Saddam Hussein’s slain sons and whether U.S. media should have published them. Some responses: “In an attempt to persuade skeptical Iraqis of the demise of Saddam’s sons, the U.S. government correctly chose to release graphic photos of their slaying. Any tactic that has the possibility of further stabilizing the situation in Iraq should be adopted, and the release of the photos met this criteria. The U.S. media...

  • Republicans overdosing with drug bill

When it comes to foreign policy, I sleep better at night knowing that Republicans control the White House and the Congress. But on health care, it has lately become difficult to imagine how things could be much worse with the Democrats in charge. When the Clinton administration attempted to move us down the road toward socialized medicine, Republicans responded that the answer to health-care problems was more choice and more market incentives, not state control. Democrats have never learned this lesson, and it appears that...

  • Thanks for all the memories; Hope was a king

He gave us so many memories. From the movie screen to shows for troops far from home, from radio appearances to TV specials, Bob Hope entertained generations of Americans with his self-depreciating jokes and deadpan delivery. Hope, who recently turned 100, died late Sunday of pneumonia at his home in California. More than anything else, Bob Hope symbolized the changes America endured in the 20th century. Like many Americans, Hope was not born in this country. He was born in Eltham, England, as Leslie Townes Hope on May 29,... Full story

  • Art professor brings life to coffee shop

    Mike Linn

A local art professor has brought new meaning to the term “grande” cappuccino. If this seems a bit confusing, take a look at the mural she recently finished in the courtyard of the Do Drop In coffee shop. Micki Muhlbauer, an art professor at Eastern New Mexico University, painted a trio of colossal coffee cups and a huge spoon on a wall behind the shop located at 211 S. Ave. A. Her decision to donate her time and expertise to the mural project comes at a time when the Portales Mainstreet Organization is aggressively lobbying... Full story

  • Cannon supports job shadowing program

    Darrell Todd Maurina

CANNON AIR FORCE BASE — Job shadowing is gaining popularity as more companies give college students the chance to accompany executives or other professional staff for a few weeks during summer vacations to learn by observation what they do each day. That’s a little harder to do in the military. The Air Force can’t pack prospective recruits into the back of a plane dropping bombs on Iraq to help them learn what it’s like to be a pilot, but it has developed special programs to put cadets from the Air Force Academy and ROTC ca... Full story
