  • Time for TV to channel new ideas

    Kevin Wilson

I did some travel recently, but also made plenty of time to watch television I normally avoid when I'm working. Here are some things I picked up, none of them long enough for a full column: • There's a new game show on NBC called, “It's Worth What?” The show's hosted by Cedric the Entertainer. There's one part of the show where contestants guess what it's worth. Please tell me that did not go through development meetings at NBC without at least one person saying, “So they only win... if the price is right?” •... Full story

  • Debt plan would tamp down COLA

Military retirees, Social Security recipients and others drawing federal payments were tempted to grumble at Congress or the White House when the past two Januarys brought no cost-of-living adjustment. The real culprits were a deeply distressed economy, which drove prices down, and a logical process, set up 40 years ago, to track inflation and adjust federal payments to protect their purchasing power. Those who did complain about absent COLAs might soon have a more legitimate reason to grouse: a new yardstick for setting... Full story

  • Norway: Do justice, but protect freedom

Freedom New Mexico We continue to be horrified by the mass killings in Norway, allegedly by Anders Behring Breivik. He has confessed that, on July 22, he set off a bomb in Oslo, the country’s capital, killing at least eight people. More than 80 others were killed when he went on a killing spree at a youth camp on Utoya island. Many things still are not known. He reportedly is talking freely to police, and claims he had accomplices. On Monday, an estimated 100,000 Norwegians gathered at the capital’s city hall to ack...

  • Their view: Open government not red or blue, but evergreen

Sarah Welsh, executive director for the New Mexico Foundation for Open Government, says the public’s right to know isn’t partisan: Well, we’ve come full circle. Five years ago, Bill Richardson’s administration was asked for state e-mails about an audit of the driver’s license program. It refused, claiming executive privilege, and the Republican Party of New Mexico filed suit. This year, Secretary of State Dianna Duran was asked for state e-mails about a similar audit — a cross-check between drivers’ licenses an...

  • My turn: Language still barrier

When I was growing up, I thought everyone in Lubbock spoke Spanish. We went to the tienda down the street from my grandparents’ house; they spoke Spanish. At the park; Spanish. The music was Ramon Ayala. At Mass and cursillos (religious retreats) it was pure Spanish, with joyful shouts of “De Colores!” But then we went to the post office and it was English as Grandma Chaya instructed me and my sisters what to tell clerks. That was sometimes challenging because Grandma Chaya instructed my parents, before I was born, to teach...
