  • One dead, one critical after Friday crash

The Staff of The News|Updated Jul 19, 2019

One Clovis man died and another has been hospitalized in critical condition following a Friday morning crash on New Mexico State Road 467. According to a news release from Curry County Sheriff Wesley Waller: • A 1996 Ford Aerostar, driven by Octavio Vasquez, 28 of Clovis, was traveling north on NM 467 behind a concrete truck. As Vasquez attempted to pass the concrete truck, his vehicle struck a southbound 1996 Cadillac, driven by Marcos Urban Jr., 64 of Clovis, resulting in a head-on collision. • Urban was transported to Pla...

    David Grieder, Staff|Updated Jul 19, 2019

LAS CRUCES — A Clovis man convicted in 2014 of manslaughter was among prison inmates charged with attempted murder last week in Las Cruces. Rico Sena, 32, and four others allegedly attacked a sergeant and officer at the Southern New Mexico Correctional Facility on June 16 after a nurse finished passing out medication in their pod. Inmates “congregated around the pod door” when prison staff attempted to place them into lockdown and were ultimately subdued with “less lethal shotgun and pepper ball grenades,” according...

  • Masaitis takes command at Cannon Air Force Base

    Kevin Wilson - Staff|Updated Jul 18, 2019

CANNON AIR FORCE BASE — There was plenty of pomp and precision Wednesday morning at Cannon Air Force Base, with dozens of airmen in formation practicing every step and rotation hours in advance of the change of command ceremony that accompanies every odd-numbered summer. But the unmistakable elements that filled the hangar on the base’s south side were pride and camaraderie as Lt. Gen. James Slife didn’t say much about departing Col. Stewart Hammons or incoming 27th Speci...

  • Faith: I wonder what Jesus would say to Israel Folau

    Curtis Shelburne|Updated Jul 16, 2019

There’s a big problem brewing down under. Free speech. Religious liberty. Political correctness. Employees’ rights. Employers’ rights. Contract law. If those are just a few of the spokes on the spinning wheel, picture a monkey wrench being shoved right into it. Yep. It’s a wreck. According to a Wall Street Journal article by Rhiannon Hoyle (July 1), Rugby Australia has fired one of the most famous sports figures in Australia and shredded his multimillion-dollar contrac...

  • Summer birthdays always a gamble

    Carrie Classon|Updated Jul 16, 2019

This is my birthday month. Those of you with summer birthdays know it’s a little different. In the middle of March, everyone says, “Wow! A birthday party!” You bring treats to school and everyone is happy for an excuse to celebrate. It’s different for the summer kids. Everyone is already busy with vacations and visitors and then, somewhere in the middle of all that, someone says, “Oh! It’s Carrie’s birthday, isn’t it?” My birthday was particularly unreliable because it fell when the plant where my father worked as an engi...

  • Moon walk forever linked with dead cat

    David Stevens - Staff|Updated Jul 16, 2019

Most Americans remember July 20, 1969, as the night man first walked on the moon. Neil Armstrong stepped onto the moon’s surface at 8:56 p.m. (MDT), telling the world it was “one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” I watched it all live on television, but that’s not what I remember most about that night 50 years ago. What I remember most: Benny Floyd killed a cat in our front yard. He didn’t do it on purpose. We were playing tag on the front porch, running in and out of the house to look at the moon, then the...
