  • Proposed racetrack settlement ratified

    Ron Warnick|Updated Apr 26, 2019

The New Mexico Racing Commission’s ratification Thursday of a proposed settlement clears the way for it possibly awarding a sixth racetrack license during a special meeting on Tuesday — provided the governor doesn’t fire the commission first. The commission, after a closed executive session during its regular meeting Thursday at its office in Albuquerque, approved the agreement with Hidalgo Downs LLC, one of the license applicants from Lordsburg. A settlement was announced in early April between Hidalgo and the New Mexic...

  • Fighting butterflies

    Peter Stein, Staff writer|Updated Apr 23, 2019

CLOVIS - Harvey Park won't lie. He's excited, nervous, almost ready to jump out of his skin as Friday's Mixed Martial Arts lightweight fight against Demarques Jackson approaches. When asked about it, Park actually chuckled. "How would you feel? Yeah, there's butterflies," said Park, a Clovis resident who grew up in Melrose, with a Navy stint in between. "It's worse than other sports because the stakes are higher, in my opinion. ... It's a whole different feeling when it's...

  • Pay taxes, but don't fall for con

    Curtis Shelburne|Updated Apr 23, 2019

Tax Day 2019 has come and gone. It’s actually just Tax Filing Day since every day is a tax day and, if you somehow still manage to own a business or be self-employed, you’ll have several more lesser but still taxing opportunities. As disheartening as Tax Day always is, April 15, 2019, was far more depressing than usual as we watched in grief and horror as Notre Dame Cathedral burned. That day was also decidedly disheartening for many employees who file what passes for a sim...

CANYON, Texas — Though the NCAA track and field season continues to wind down, Eastern New Mexico’s team continues to heat up. At the West Texas A&M Invitational on Saturday, Eastern’s track and field team set three NCAA Division II provisional qualifying marks, broke two school records and tied another. On the women’s side, a pair of Greyhound sprinters in Maijah Mathis and Kandice Miles had standout performances. Mathis broke her own school record in the 100-meter dash, crossing the finish line with a time of 11.71 to plac...

  • Read report; draw own conclusions

    Tom McDonald|Updated Apr 23, 2019

If Donald Trump wants to convince the public that the Mueller report vindicates him, he needs to keep us from reading the report ourselves. Or even part of it. Just a couple of hours of reading its summaries and conclusions (which I did over the weekend, and look forward to reading it entirely when time permits) will leave you seriously concerned about Russian meddling and downright disgusted with how badly Trump has behaved since taking office. But don’t take my word for it. Go to justice.gov/sco and click into “Report on...

  • Laws are creating immigration issue

    Kent McManigal|Updated Apr 23, 2019

Imagine you have an antique car in your back yard behind a privacy fence. A neighbor climbs your fence, sees the car, and decides something must be done about it. How he decided your property is his concern is a mystery. Clearly, he’s a bad neighbor who doesn’t mind his own business. Then it gets worse. He doesn’t ask about the car, offer to buy it or to help you get it running. Instead, he hires the local crime boss to force you to build a shed for the car, paint it pink,...

  • NMAA within rights to shut down contest

    Albuquerque Journal|Updated Apr 23, 2019

Any parent whose child competes at anything knows the feeling: the stomach-clenching anxiety, the blood-boiling righteous indignation when you feel your kid was robbed — likely outstripping the level of emotion of the actual competitor. They might clench a fist, say a prayer, mutter an expletive (hopefully under their breath). But there’s a line. At least, there oughtta be. And some New Mexico cheer and dance students, parents and coaches have clearly crossed it. According to an April 14 Albuquerque Journal article, the New M...

  • 'No questions asked' drug disposal this weekend

    David Grieder|Updated Apr 23, 2019

Here’s a spring cleaning tip from law enforcement: start with your medicine cabinet and ditch the old pills. That’s the idea with the “National Prescription Drug Take Back Day” scheduled Saturday in Clovis and Portales, encouraging the public to anonymously drop off old medications at local sites for disposal. It “addresses a crucial public safety and public health issue,” according to the Drug Enforcement Agency’s website for the event. A 2017 survey estimated 6 million Americans “misused controlled prescription dr...

Before plunging ahead, however, it’s incumbent upon us to pause and offer our gratitude to Jody Balch, who’s served as our leader for the last five years. Balch began his career in 1979 and has served in a wide range of capacities: from the classroom to assistant principal, followed by principal at Yucca Middle School for a number of years. Moving to Clovis High...

All four remained in jail Tuesday, awaiting additional court appearances. Investigators allege the April 7 slaying of Adam Holts, 35, in Portales was an armed robbery effort gone awry. • Renovation turns up unexpected treasure

    Betty Williamson|Updated Apr 23, 2019

The recent expansion and renovation at Central Christian Church in Portales turned up an unexpected time capsule of sorts, and an even more unexpected connection with the pastor who blessed it almost 61 years ago. Don Thomas is the current pastor of the church at 1528 S. Main Ave. in Portales, which had its official grand re-opening earlier this month after a high-tech, energy efficient makeover. Thomas said early in the remodeling process he realized that the addition of a...

  • This little piggy sold groceries

    David Stevens|Updated Apr 23, 2019

I miss Piggly Wiggly. There are probably better grocery stores around here today, but they don't have better names or histories. My dad worked at the Piggly Wiggly in Muleshoe for four decades, mostly as its produce manager. He bought my Fighting Ace action figure from that store's toy isle. He kept a John Niland-autographed football in the employees-only back room at Piggly Wiggly for at least a week, playing catch in the parking lot with co-workers, before giving it to me...

  • Self-promotion isn't always a terrible thing

    Carrie Classon|Updated Apr 23, 2019

I originally joined Facebook when a long-lost cousin sent me an invitation. No one had heard from this cousin in ages when I got a note out of the blue. Facebook was relatively new then and I hadn’t considered joining. But I figured if I could reconnect with family I wouldn’t hear from otherwise, why not? Since then, I’ve become a writer, which means I sit by myself staring out the window for hours at a time. There are about 200 yards of sidewalk I watch most of the day like some sort of hypervigilant Neighborhood Watch...
