    Kevin Wilson|Updated Jul 29, 2017

PORTALES — One signing led to another, and another Portales Ram is getting set to play college basketball. Recent graduate Junior Ramirez has inked a letter-of-intent to play for Ecclesia College in Springdale, Arkansas. "It's something we've been working on since the spring, and we were able to complete it a week or two weeks ago," Portales boys coach Rickie McBroom said. "At Ecclesia, he's going to have an opportunity to play right away, from what we understand. They need a...

  • Training, 'courage and teamwork'

    David Grieder, Staff writer|Updated Jul 9, 2017

CLOVIS — It didn’t take long for first responders to locate the child drowning on July 4 at Hillcrest Park and bring him to an ambulance. For Clovis Police officer Brian Wanzor, one of the first to pull 12-year-old Gevion Lewis from the murky green waters of the pond that afternoon, the event was also a disturbingly close reminder of how quickly tragedy can strike. “I just prayed, man. I was just praying in my head, just wanting him to be alright,” Wanzor said Friday. “I used to swim in those ponds. I lived in that trailer p...

  • How do you beat the heat?

    Anna George, Staff writer|Updated Jul 9, 2017

PORTALES - With the temperature staying consistently over 90 degrees this summer, the heat is here and it is not going anywhere. But there are several ways to beat the heat. Here are some of those stories: If it is a water activity, Allison Ciancio will be using it to cool down this summer. Ciancio said her preferred activity is swimming but she has also been taking cold showers and playing in her front lawn with a hose. "Those things are fun and keep me cold," she said. She...

  • Cars and community

Alisa Boswell, Portales managing editor|Updated Jul 9, 2017

PORTALES - Getting to enjoy the company of others with similar interests while showing off his 1948 Willys Overland Jeep pickup truck and 1937 Chevrolet Business Coupe is "just a fun thing to do," according to Clovis resident and Desert Cruzers member Chuck Wood. Local car shows are "a lot of people with similar interests; that's what really matters," Wood said. • Purgatory box intact for next visit

Kevin Wilson, Clovis managing editor|Updated Jul 9, 2017

Every year when I visit my childhood home in Montana, I spend my final few days in the laundry room attempting the impossible — making sure I won’t have laundry to do when I get home. It somehow never happens. I do laundry the day before I leave for Montana, and I do laundry the morning I leave Montana. Somehow, there’s still something to be washed. It doesn’t include bed sheets nearly as often as it should. But women, I come to you on behalf of men with a truce: You don’t question us on how often we wash our bedding,...

  • Look forward to make U.S. better

    Steve Hansen, Columnist|Updated Jul 9, 2017

It will never be 1962 again, but there are some highly placed people who want it to return or have never left that year. Our president, Donald Trump, wants to return manufacturing jobs to the U.S., return Cuba to its Communist enemy status and rebuild the military to Cold War levels. Just like things were in 1962. Even the president cannot reverse globalization and automation, the two forces that have had the worst effects on U.S. manufacturing jobs, which made the U.S a great place to live in 1962. We should keep looking...

  • College essay as true now as ever

    Wendel Sloan, Columnist|Updated Jul 9, 2017

While recently going through a treasure/trash trove of my youthful musings, I ran across an essay written as an 18-year-old lonely freshman in a four-person dorm suite at East Texas State University. My hometown roommate and I played high school football, and got stuck rooming with two players from a town that had beaten us, 36-0, in bi-district. They were well-off and rubbed salt in the wound by wearing letter jackets as they pulled up in new sports cars with name-brand...

  • UNM athletics needs to play by budget rules

    Albuquerque Journal|Updated Jul 9, 2017

Whether by design or happenstance, the University of New Mexico’s Athletic Department — which operates on an annual budget of roughly $33 million, but owes the university about $4.4 million — has not undergone a comprehensive audit by UNM’s internal audit department in at least six years. Possibly longer. The audit department has, however, audited: UNM Press; the university president’s travel and entertainment expenses (four times, we’re told); and cash controls at the Pediatrics Department’s bake sales. That random mix is...

  • Former Cannon commander dies

Alisa Boswell, Portales managing editor|Updated Jul 9, 2017

Upon meeting him, a person might never guess Lt. Gen. Donald Peterson was a high-ranking Air Force officer who commanded his own base. "He was a three-star general, but you would never know it. That's just the kind of guy he was. He was so humble and personable," said Rob Spencer, Peterson's brother in law. Peterson served in the U.S. Air Force for 35 years and "loved every minute of it," according to his wife, Gayle, who said she thinks her husband would have done the job...

  • Learned to swim and then some in arid desert

    Karl Terry, Columnist|Updated Jul 8, 2017

Growing up in arid eastern New Mexico, it’s a wonder I ever learned to swim — but I did. I even learned to SCUBA dive in Portales. We didn’t get to the city swimming pool too much until I moved to town at age 10, but we did have irrigation ditches. According to my parents, my first swim was the day I fell in the ditch as a toddler. When dad looked up all he could see was my straw hat floating down the ditch. After watching for a second to see if I could dog paddle he pulled me...
