  • Roybal named Football Coach of the Year

    Peter Stein|Updated Apr 19, 2018

Dickie Roybal was honored, but confused. "New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame," the former Melrose football coach thought. "There's a New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame?" There is, and they recently honored Roybal by selecting him as one of their High School Coaches of the Year and making him part of their 2018 Hall of Fame induction ceremony that took place in Albuquerque on April 8. "To be honest, I really didn't know what it was," Roybal said. "It's not advertised here on this side... Full story

  • Butterflies like it messy

    Betty Williamson|Updated Apr 19, 2018

People who are serious about butterflies and moths are known as lepidopterists, a word that might seem better suited for a spelling bee than a nature walk. Maybe that’s why Steve Cary is simply called “The Butterfly Guy.” It’s a title he’s earned after 37 years of living in New Mexico, often in pursuit of some of our tiniest and most beautiful residents. Cary calls Santa Fe home, but he has traveled the state exhaustively, and spent years as the New Mexico Park Service’s...

  • Thank you, Barbara Bush, for the hugs

    Tom Rosshirt, Guest columnist|Updated Apr 19, 2018

My brother Matt died of AIDS 26 years ago, passing away in his bed in my parents’ home in Houston. It was a benighted time for people with AIDS. There were no antiretrovirals then. There was nothing much you could do for an AIDS patient but hold his hand. And many people still thought you could get AIDS by touching. My parents knew of individuals who’d been fired from their jobs for volunteering for AIDS organizations. That’s how crazy the fear was. As Matt was dying, we were befriended by a man named Lou Tesconi, a volun...

  • Good class can turn language into feast

    Cindy Kleyn-Kennedy|Updated Apr 19, 2018

The subject of English language arts in middle school is not generally a topic which excites or tantalizes the average individual. However, when packaged creatively by an innovative teacher, it can be game changing. Bethanie Baker is an English teacher at Yucca Middle School who has set up “Book Tastings” in her classroom. Dropping by her classroom, the first thing I noticed was the sign, “Welcome to Baker’s Book Café.” Student desks were grouped into fours, facing each other...

  • Clovis baseball team finds itself in rare territory

    David Stevens|Updated Apr 19, 2018

Clovis High School’s baseball team may soon reach standards it’s seldom approached in its 78-year history. By all accounts, the 19-3 Wildcats need just five more victories to break the school record of 23 set in 2004. That 2004 team’s season ended in the state tournament championship game, the only time in New Mexico Activities Association history Clovis has played for a baseball title. This year’s team is ranked second in the state, possibly on a collision course with to... Full story

  • Prosecutors: Inmate faces possible 100-plus years

    David Grieder|Updated Apr 18, 2018

CLOVIS — Jewelry thieving, jail escape, drug trafficking and smuggling — that’s a lot to accomplish in less than a day, but a Clovis man is charged with that and more after returning late from a court-approved furlough last month. Brandon Wagner, 33, was arraigned this week on new felony charges of shoplifting and aggravated assault on a health care worker, the latest in a slew of felony charges emerging after he returned over 16 hours late to the Curry County jail following a March 27 plea conference. After the plea, he wa... Full story

    Eamon Scarbrough|Updated Apr 18, 2018

PORTALES — The fate of a memorandum of understanding between Portales and Clovis will be in Clovis’ hands after the state demanded a piece of the action. Councilors on Tuesday approved amendments to the MOU requested by the New Mexico Construction Industries Division, with the stipulation that all requests for building inspections would be directed to the state until the changes are approved by Clovis. The MOU in question would allow Portales to use Clovis’ building inspectors — because the community doesn’t have four buil...
