  • Ames Straw Poll will jump-start 2012 election

Freedom New Mexico This time of year, most Americans are spending a balmy day at the beach, or heading out on vacation. Not the Republican presidential candidates. They’re frequently swooping into Iowa to campaign for the Aug. 13 Ames Straw Poll. The non-binding event is the first expression by actual voters in America for their preference. And it’s a run-up to the Feb. 6 Iowa caucuses, which are important in that they determine delegates to next year’s Republican National Convention. Democrats skip holding a straw poll,...

  • Martini served with political twist

Caller ID told me it was Barney, my friend from New Jersey. It was a call I had been dreading. Just a few days before, a New Jersey professor had been busted in New Mexico for running a multi-state Internet prostitution ring. I had been unmerciful to Barney, told him to keep his goons at home. Now, it turns out, the New Jersey guy was here apparently visiting a beloved University of New Mexico professor who was allegedly a partner in the hooker deal. I was going to get an earful. Surprisingly, that was not what Barney had on... Full story

  • Consider other options for hotel

Recently there has been a great deal of discussion regarding the Affordable Housing ordinance/plan passed by the Clovis City Commission. It’s now the subject of a negative referendum election to be held on Aug. 2. It has been said this ordinance will allow the city to demolish, and clear properties that can be donated to developers of AH projects. The fact is the city has in the past sold properties to entities for as little as $1 without such an ordinance and can continue to do so in the future. It has been said such AH p... Full story

  • Donkey sports take patience

I was reminiscing with a group of Dexter breeders. A Michigan farmer named Lew said when he was a boy, his grandpa hired a mule man to clear some timber. It was raining like a cow pouring hot tea on a flat rock! The mule man sat in his old Chevy coupe with his arm out the window holding onto his harnessed log-skipping mules, Bob and Jim. Bob got agitated. His mule logic could not understand why he, as the acknowledged smartest, cleverest, and most dexterous of the equids, was forced to stand in the rain, while the laziest,... Full story

Roosevelt County is bringing a new addition to the county fairgrounds in the form of a 12,600 square foot windmill park. Longtime Portales residents Bill and Alta Dalley, who have collected old-fashioned windmills for the last 30 years, now have more than 80 windmills stored at their home on South Kilgore in Portales. “When we mentioned we were getting rid of them, some of the kids and grandkids got upset cause they said it wouldn’t be home without the windmills,” Bill Dalley said, laughing. “The kids are wanting to keep th... Full story

  • Clovis hosting redistricting meeting

    Kevin Wilson

If there is any consensus to be found with redistricting coming up this fall, it’s uncertainty. Among representatives and analysts, there’s nothing guaranteed regarding how the Legislature does its decennial organization of its 70 House seats and 42 Senate seats, along with congressional districts and districts for city councils and commissions and school boards. The Clovis Civic Center will be host to one of many public meetings across the state with the state’s redistricting committee. The meeting is scheduled for 10 a.m....

  • My turn: Breaking into new business

Occasionally, I attend seminars about becoming a better time manager, communicator, team player, more Zen-like, etc. Realizing how much these companies make in peddling high-falutin’ ways of saying do your job, I‘m creating my own “Dark Chocolate and Hoops: Adrenaline Boosts for Drowsy Employees” seminar. Most seminars have testimonials from satisfied customers. Here are a few that I envision for mine. • “The seminar was exactly as Sloan advertised. While the 80-percent dark chocolate caused some to pack on a few pound...
