ROSWELL, N.M. (AP) — A military fighter plane crashed Wednesday in southern New Mexico after the pilot ejected safely, Air Force officials said. The QF-4 Phantom from Holloman Air Force Base crashed southwest of Roswell in grasslands between Roswell and Artesia, sparking a fire that covered at least 80 acres. No structures were threatened, according to state forestry spokesman Dan Ware. The pilot was in good condition, according to a prepared statement from Col. David Krumm, commander of the 49th Wing. KOB-TV reported...
My parents believed in giving thanks. Yes, they believed in giving thanks primarily to God for the blessings he showers upon us. But Mom & Dad also believed in giving thanks to the people around us. My mother, normally a most loving woman, was an absolute tyrant regarding “thank you” notes. From the moment we were old enough to scratch out a note, if we received any kind of gift from friends or family, she’d glue a writing instrument to our hands, staple our posteriors into a chair, and crack the whip as we wrote the...
When the city of Clovis changes the zoning on the golf course in Colonial Park so they are able to serve liquor, the cost to the city for that liquor license will be minimal — less than $100. If a local businessman tries to purchase a liquor license, the cost can amount to hundreds of thousands of dollars. Each time a local municipality opens an establishment that serves liquor, it decreases the value of the local businessman’s license. It also makes it that much more...
Freedom New Mexico Americans have been upset at the extreme security measures imposed at airports by the Transportation Security Administration. YouTube videos show passenger pat-downs — with touching that appears far too intrusive — have been done on children and a former Miss USA. The latest controversy involves 95-year-old Lena Reppert, suffering from leukemia. June 18, TSA officers in Florida made her remove her Depends adult diaper to clear security. TSA officials said the removal was not necessary. But...

CNJ staff photo: Sharna Johnson Curry County Deputy Assessor Shelly Brown goes through property cards Wednesday afternoon. The assessor's office often receives calls from homeowners whose escrow was calculated incorrectly after property tax laws were changed in 2005. Homeowners who purchased residential property since 2005 may get struck with lightning — tax lightning that is. Escrow adjustments that drive up monthly house payments are an unexpected side effect of...
Freedom New Mexico Investigators are trying to determine if the shooting of a 32-year-old Nara Visa man was self-defense or homicide. Ty Fields was shot Saturday night during what police have said was a fight between two men “over property that had not been returned.” “This could be a homicide or self defense and we’re not ruling anything out... We’re not sure which one we’re (looking at). Both are still on the table at this point,” said state police Sgt. Tim Johnson. Johnson said investigators believe everyone...

Continuing with news from the Clovis Schools' Operations Department and their summer activities: The front of Barry Elementary got a facelift recently. The multi-colored rocks and plants replaced the long row of juniper trees along the front of the building. The new look is cleaner, crisper and there's no more chance of junipers blowing over or collecting everything that blows by. Also, a new driving and turn-around area was added to the south side of the building, making student pickup more fluid. A glance at Barry's...

My brother and I came upon a badger out in the pasture one summer afternoon. He looked at us. We looked at him. He glared at us and looked mean, so we thought we should return his angry stare. His body was muscular, and his mottled brownish gray fur was highlighted by a white streak from the back of his neck to the end of his nose, and white streaks down each side of his face. His head looked like he’d been stepped on — flattened from top to bottom. He wasn’t afraid of us. In fact, he acted downright belligerent....
