  • SBA results justify targeted funding, accountability attached

    — Albuquerque Journal If there was any question of whether New Mexico’s students — including minority students from poor families — could rise to meet higher expectations, the 2013 Standards-Based Assessment answers it. And if there was any question of whether state-level education reform and spending — targeted to address specific deficiencies — could do a better job improving student performance than more millions funneled through a statewide formula to random local programs, the 2013 SBA answers that, as well. Because the...

  • Fire in the sky

PNT senior writer [email protected] Bobby Terry’s eyes were as bright as they reflected the fireworks in the Thursday night sky. He made they typical noises that a child would make in awe of the bright flares and smiley face shapes but the colors that garnered the biggest reaction from Terry were red, white and blue. link Joshua Lucero: PNT correspondent Spectators take in the Portales fireworks display from the hill at Greyhound Arena Thursday night. “I like how the...

  • Let freedom ring through this day

    Joan Clayton

Throughout the history of this nation men and women have made tremendous sacrifices to maintain freedom. Life without freedom is a life of every type of tyranny. Freedom is the most precious gift a country can possess and it comes with a price. This is our America and we want our freedom. We love our lifestyle. We honor those who gave their time and lives to preserve our way of life. Whenever I see “Old Glory” I want to salute it. I love the red, white and blue and I don’t appreciate any disrespect to our flag or any other...

  • Vultures aren't so bad

My first encounter with vultures was when I saw them in a movie years back. They were circling over dead Calvary in the hot desert of the Southwest. That impressed me. Not long afterwards, I sighted some circling vultures as a youngster while my friend Frankie and I were hiking the foothills of mountains near our home in Raton. We anxiously climbed out of an arroyo we were exploring and began a rapid pursuit in the direction of the circling vultures. Our intent was to see...

  • My Turn: ‘Monsters University’ as cute as first

    Alisa Boswell

“Monsters University” had a different dynamic than as its predecessor, “Monsters Inc.,” but it was just as cute with just as much excitement as the first one. The new movie goes back to the college days of leading monster characters Mike and Sully, who start the movie with a strong dislike of one another then build a strong friendship as the story progresses. Everything about the movie was as charming as the first from the story line to character interactions and dynamics. It’s a great family film appropriate for all ages....
