  • Seven Curry, Roosevelt schools make state volleyball field

The Staff of The News|Updated Nov 5, 2017

Seven Curry and Roosevelt county schools received bids to the New Mexico high school volleyball tournament, with two looking to defend their titles as top seeds. Elida, going for an eighth-consecutive title, will go in as the top seed — and do it with plenty of District 4-1A company, Melrose, the only team to beat Elida in its own classification since the 2009 season, is the second seed, while Grady is the seventh seed and Floyd is the 12th seed. Texico will try to win its fourth-straight Class 3A title, and their 10th t... Full story

  • Thanks, veterans, for your service

    Karl Terry, Columnist|Updated Nov 5, 2017

This coming Friday we “observe” Veterans Day in America. I say observe, because the actual Veterans Day is always Nov. 11. We just need a federal holiday in which the many can forget the few who served and gave them that day off. The holiday began as Armistice Day, celebrating the signing of the armistice ending World War I, which was signed at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. The day honors all veterans of all wars, living and dead. Please don’t confuse the ob...

  • State football playoff pairings announced

The Staff of The News|Updated Nov 5, 2017

Whoever stayed up late didn’t see too many surprises in prep football playoff pairings, as Clovis, Portales, Texico and Tucumcari high schools all made its respective 12-team brackets. Portales is in the best position of them all, taking the second seed in Class 4A behind St. Michael’s, which handed the Rams (9-1) their only defeat of the season in Santa Fe, 21-20. A rematch would be on the road, as the Rams hosted the Horsemen in last year’s semifinals. The Clovis Wildcats ended up as the ninth seed in Class 6A, just as coac... Full story

    Zech Lucero|Updated Nov 5, 2017

Playoff starts, redemption and revenge were the themes across eastern New Mexico and west Texas Friday night, with three local teams claiming victories — one of them a playoff rout. Dora 64, Pine Hill 0 The No.5-seed Dora Coyotes (6-3) entered Friday night's matchup coming off of a bye week that allowed little notification of their seeding arrangement, but managed to focus on their game and shut out Pine hill (3-4) 64-0 in the first half. The bye also allowed for head Coach Ma...

  • Angels on 'earth duty' make life a little sweeter

    Patti Dobson, Faith columnist|Updated Nov 4, 2017

Sometimes, it’s the little things that make the biggest impression. I had an unexpected, yet welcome, surprise one recent week. A few of them, actually. As it turns out, each of these surprises coincided with a difficult situation. I mentioned these things to a friend, who immediately said it was nothing more than coincidence. I don’t believe in coincidence; but, I do believe in divine intervention. Coincidence or divine intervention, I’m grateful for the angels who are pulli...

  • I'm my mother's son; bullies beware

    Wendel Sloan, Columnist|Updated Nov 4, 2017

The approaching anniversary of my mother’s death at 92 on Nov. 7, 2010, makes me reminisce about our differing political views, and the traits I inherited or acquired from her while growing up in the east Texas countryside. Diplomatic to a fault, Fay Sloan was too sensitive about causing even a hint of friction with her favorite son (me) to talk politics. Although I can’t definitively speak for her, in her latter decades I believe Mother generally voted Republican. Since my...

  • Bad decisions can get great results

    Kevin Wilson, Managing Editor|Updated Nov 4, 2017

There’s not much to enjoy about a sick day, once you tire of, “How many times can I cough today?” So you enjoy the one effortless thing you can do lying down — catch up on TV. A quick scan through my streaming apps took me to “Too Funny to Fail,” a documentary about the eight-episode run of “The Dana Carvey Show.” The documentary, and Carvey’s show, are exclusively on Hulu. I first thought, “Well, this won’t drive up the subscriber base.” When it first aired, I watched a few episodes, found it funny and got a little disapp...

  • We must have zero tolerance for IRS antics

    Albuquerque Journal|Updated Nov 4, 2017

Despite the repeated denials and righteous indignation, what many suspected turned out to be true: The IRS under the Obama administration targeted groups for their conservative political views. It’s something that should concern all Americans, because they should be just as worried about an IRS under President Trump being tempted to do the same thing to different political victims. And for that reason, Americans deserve more than the IRS apology that comes as part of a settlement in which the powerful agency that strikes f...

  • Fancy tops great with worn jeans

    Dnieka Hartsfield|Updated Nov 4, 2017

We all have our favorite go-to outfit if all else fails after trying to choose an outfit for a social event. In most cases, jeans are appropriate for just about any occasion. If you're a jeans and tee person, putting outfits together should be an easy task. One fun way to dress up your jeans and tee outfit this holiday season is to pair your favorite jeans with a less traditional top. Take, for instance, a two-piece suit. Break it down by mixing and matching your suit bottom...

  • Prep volleyball: Texico tops Clayton for 5-3A title

    Kevin Wilson|Updated Nov 4, 2017

TEXICO — Maryelle Dickerman admitted she was a little shocked to discover Clayton had upset Santa Rosa Thursday night in the District 5-3A volleyball semifinals and prevented — for now, at least — another Texico-Santa Rosa showdown. Shocked, but not paralyzed. Texico discovered exactly how Clayton had played well enough to reach Saturday's title game, but still pulled away quickly for a 25-20, 25-14, 25-7 victory at Texico Sports Arena. Dickerman had 17 kills and two block...

  • Prep volleyball: Pintos shock Rams

    Eric Murray|Updated Nov 4, 2017

PORTALES — The Moriarty Pintos proved that the "third time is the charm," winning Saturday's 4A District 4 volleyball tournament championship game against Portales. The Pintos, who lost both of their regular season matches with the Rams, took Portales down in four sets, 19-25, 25-17, 25-18 and 25-22, to win their second-consecutive district tournament title. "I think we just started a little tight, a little nervous and a little anxious," Moriarty coach Kim Bell said of the f...

  • College volleyball: Lions sweep ENMU

The Staff of The News|Updated Nov 4, 2017

PORTALES — We’ve all heard the line about how close only counts with horseshoes and hand grenades. It was true for the Eastern New Mexico University volleyball team in Saturday’s Lone Star Conference showdown against Texas A&M-Commerce at Greyhound Arena. ENMU stayed close with A&M-Commerce throughout the night, keeping every set tight. Ultimately, though, the Greyhounds were swept away 3-0 by scores of 24-26, 14-25, 23-25. Nevertheless, the Hounds did qualify for the Lone Star Conference playoffs, so a big horseshoe managed...
