the Staff of the News|Updated Jul 3, 2018

RICHARDSON, Texas — For the second-straight year, and third time overall, Eastern New Mexico University has claimed a share of the Lone Star Conference’s Academic Excellence Award. The award, now in its fifth year, rewards a men’s and a women’s champion. The top LSC athletic department in each category is honored, and for the 2017-18 academic year, ENMU claimed the women’s award. Western New Mexico, meanwhile, claimed the men’s award for this year. For the Hounds, it is the t...

  • Fallout remains year after drowning

    David Grieder|Updated Jul 3, 2018

CLOVIS — Though a festive occasion for most, Independence Day this year in Clovis also marks the first anniversary of a tragic incident at a city park that left a child dead less than two weeks later. There is little discernibly different now at Hillcrest Park, but the signs advising against swimming and wading in public ponds are back in place. Officials said they had disappeared shortly before the afternoon of July 4, 2017, when 12-year old Gevion Lewis went under the o...

  • Put independence back in the day

    Kent McManigal|Updated Jul 3, 2018

What does Independence Day mean to you? To me, Independence Day has morphed into the most tragic of holidays. Its original meaning has been completely lost; turned on its head. The way it is most commonly celebrated now is like celebrating Christmas with hatred and theft. It has become a shadow of what it should be. Of what it may have been once upon a time. Instead of being a celebration of American independence, it has been turned into a worship service for the U.S. governme...

CLOVIS — Proponents of Clovis as the site for the state's sixth and final racino license presented their vision for bringing a racetrack and casino to the area by 2020 during a meeting on Tuesday at the Clovis/Curry County Chamber of Commerce. "What (a racino) does for our community I believe is threefold: it brings in jobs, it brings in economic development and quality of life and all three of those are things that we need here in our community," said Gayla Brumfield, a r...

  • Charity softball touranment is a go

the Staff of the News|Updated Jul 3, 2018

CLOVIS — The Clovis Softball Association received enough entries to do its annual “Striking Out Cancer” benefit tournament. However, there won’t be a women’s bracket. Tournament Director Roger Jackson originally said the tournament would be postponed to later in the year if it couldn’t field eight men’s and eight women’s teams. The women’s field did not reach the eight-team minimum. However, Jackson decided to go ahead with an all-men’s tournament after 16 signed up. “We just took two more this morning,” Jackson sai...

  • Pot changes could do some bipartisan good

    Updated Jul 3, 2018

The recently released list of Texas Republicans’ biggest legislative priorities was largely expected — except for that surprising bit about weed. Decriminalizing small amounts of marijuana and improving medical marijuana guidelines finally made it to the state GOP’s platform, and we hope legislators jump to action in January. Marijuana-related legislation is more popular among Texans than you might expect. A 2017 poll found that only 17 percent of Texans were still against legalization in any form, with medical use still cons...
