"Transparency is an essential feature of the relationship between the people and their government." -- N.M. Supreme Court Justice Patricio Serna, in an opinion written for the court Last week the state's highest court made an important — and unanimous — decision limiting who can claim, and what can be kept from the public under the guise of "executive privilege." It is welcome guidance, especially considering the previous gubernatorial administration's expansive view of that secrecy tool. Under then-Gov. Bill Richardson, the...
The children of New Mexico's Baptist Children's Home in Portales have extended family in the Air Force. Cannon Air Force Base members are putting forth an effort to be big brothers and sisters in the lives of the residents at the children's home, many of whom come from troubled circumstances. Staff members at the children's home, serving children of all ages, say that the children feel loved and welcome anytime they interact with military members from Cannon and now airmen at Cannon want to extend that relationship. "They...
July 6, 1415, was a sad day in the history of the church, when a dedicated pastor in Prague (who was committed to God's Word and sharing it with his people) was condemned by both church and state and burned at the stake as a heretic. Before he died, he said, "You may cook this "goose" (the meaning of "Hus" in Bohemian), but after me will come a swan!" A hundred years later Martin Luther (identified as the swan) was set on the path by God to continue what Hus had begun. Many, both friend and foe, have noted many parallels... Full story

While I am in no way a scientist, I am an endlessly fascinated observer of nature. Even as we and our neighbors have plodded through this drought, reducing herds and leaving fields unplanted, I am amazed daily by what has survived and, in some cases, thrived. The last month or so on my morning walks, I have seen an abundance of dung beetles. They happen to be favorites of mine, these dedicated little arthropods that devote themselves to shaping balls of manure they push backwards on meandering paths. Almost comical to watch,...
