  • Portales girl survives rabid fox

    David Grieder, Staff writer|Updated Jul 2, 2017

PORTALES - Rylee Ainsworth is a little shaken, but doing well after a rabid fox bit her on the ankle Thursday morning in her backyard outside Portales. Rylee, who turns 5 next week, is taking rabies shots for the next few weeks after a gray male fox bit her twice, said her father, Ryan Ainsworth. "She still kind of doesn't want to go outside. It scared her," he said. "The fox literally had her by the ankle and was trying to drag her back like he was trying to take her and go...

  • Best wishes on your next chapter, Dr. Gamble

    Karl Terry, Columnist|Updated Jul 2, 2017

Lean and lanky, half scarecrow and half history professor, at times it was hard to convince folks who didn’t know him, that unassuming man on campus was actually the university president. Never mind, there aren’t too many people on campus or in Portales that don’t count Steve Gamble as a friend now. He came to our community in 2001 to take the helm of our most beloved institution, Eastern New Mexico University. As the ninth president of ENMU, Gamble quickly made himself at hom...

  • Accessories make your holiday look

    Dnieka Hartsfield, NiekaStyle|Updated Jul 2, 2017

Make your Independence Day holiday fashionable and patriotic with a mix of prints. For the first idea, bring back the maxi dress and add a belt to add a little more chic, like the blue and white southwest print by Ralph Lauren. Adding a red sandal will complete your look. If you aren’t one for dresses, try on white straight-leg jeans with a navy striped tee. When planning your red, white and blue pairings, nautical pieces are the simplest to come by and can be edgy and c...

  • Yes, John, you deserved the attention

Thomas Garcia, Quay County Sun|Updated Jul 2, 2017

Recently while attending a friend’s memorial service, I had the chance to visit with people I have not seen since I was a child. No one likes a funeral, but they always bring people together. At this particular memorial service we were saying goodbye to our friend John Cammack. I remember no matter where I was, if I saw John he would come over, shake my hand, ask how I was doing and inquire about my parents and sister. John’s passing was sudden and unexpected. That might be hard to believe considering he was 74, but he was...

  • Every day is a gift; celebrate it

    Patti Dobson, Religion columnist|Updated Jul 2, 2017

Grief is a fickle beast. It’s a lot like the ocean creeping back during high tide. There’s an ebb and flow; one minute the sea is calm, and the next you’re engulfed. There isn’t a right or wrong way to “do” grief. It happens. I don’t know that time heals all where grief is concerned. I think it is more of adjusting to a new normal. My husband Wayne and I both lost our mothers to cancer, Wayne’s mom 12 years ago to liver cancer, and mine to breast cancer nearly 18 years ago. W...

  • Remembering bombs a bit off target

    David Stevens, Editor|Updated Jul 2, 2017

This holiday week seems a good time to remember one of the biggest BOOM! BOOM! boo-boos in our region’s history. The U.S. Army accidentally bombed Boise City, Oklahoma, on July 5, 1943. The Dalhart, Texas, Army Air Base, which was about 90 miles northeast of Tucumcari, was responsible for the oops. It’s funny today because nobody got hurt. It was kinda funny then, except to those in the B-17 who missed their training target by about 20 miles. They dropped six shells — each...

  • If you're going to brag, do it loudly

    Wendel Sloan, Columnist|Updated Jul 2, 2017

Here are a few behaviors that make me yawn: Humble-bragging If you’ve got something to brag about, say it loud and proud. On the rare occasions I hit the winning three-pointer in noon-time basketball, I peacock it on Facebook with embroidery about swishing nothing but net after arching the shot over the outreached fingertips of a 6-10 former NBA player. Of course, I don’t mention missing my previous 15 shots while guarded by the shortest and meanest woman on the court. Whe...

  • Water protection most important decision to make

    Albuquerque Journal|Updated Jul 2, 2017

State Land Commissioner Aubrey Dunn’s decision to require that oil industry applications for water easements on state trust lands be accompanied by hydrological reviews appears a sensible step toward slowing the depletion of the Ogallala Aquifer. The Ogallala is the vast underground reservoir that provides drinking water for more than 2 million people and irrigates millions of acres of farmland. The Ogallala, which lies beneath parts of eight states from South Dakota to West Texas, includes the eastern plains of New M...

Some highlights from that interview: Q: What are some of the unique things at Cannon that you might not find at most other bases? Hammons: When you actually talk about the base itself, it looks and feels like just about any other military installation that you would go to. One of the primary differences that...

  • Fireworks shows set for Tuesday

Alisa Boswell, Portales managing editor|Updated Jul 2, 2017

Area residents can expect bigger booms at their parks on Tuesday night, according to fireworks event coordinators. "It's pretty amazing how much we are able to fundraise in our community. I like to think that making that donation is a more fun and safe option than buying a whole bunch of fireworks. This gives us a way to celebrate as a community and in a safer way," said Roosevelt County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Karl Terry. He said Portales' fundraising goal for...
