  • Independent spirit lives on in America

The Fourth of July, Independence Day, is a good time not only for hot dogs and fireworks, but to reflect for a moment on what makes this country unique, the qualities that enabled it to become in some ways the most successful country in history, and to contemplate the extent to which those qualities still animate Americans. It has been said that the United States is the only country founded on an idea, or a set of ideas, rather than on ethnic or racial similarities, kinship, conquest or the simple fact of a relatively...

  • Paperbacks offer new take on bible

If Sunday isn’t the best day to discuss my religious library, let she who has the worst arm cast the first stone. Thanks to my cousins, Chef Juandel and The Anglo Mariachi Cowboy, and me repeatedly joining the Quality Paperback Book Club (QPB) — and faithfully completing the introductory requirements before canceling and re-joining — I have amassed a small library of religiously-researched works. Included are: “The Other Bible” containing scriptures which, for practical and political reasons, never made the Bible...

  • Immigrant licenses concern citizens

I do not understand Patricia Whitney’s (June 29 letter to editor) and County Commissioner Jake Lopez’ stand concerning driver’s licenses for illegal immigrants. Ms. Whitney conveniently leaves out the word “illegal” when she refers to immigrants getting licenses. No one is against legal immigrants getting driver’s licenses. Ms. Whitney states “the senate decided to keep driver’s licenses for immigrants because it was the right thing to do.” I don’t agree that it is the “right thing to do.” People who come to America without...

  • Fire leaves about 1,300 without electricity

A fire on a power line caused 1,355 Xcel Energy customers in Portales to lose electricity Friday night. Xcel spokesman Wes Reeves said it appeared a lightning arrester failed in the 100 block of South Avenue E, causing the current to run onto the utility pole and start a fire. The fire burned the line and brought it down. Reeves said the power went out about 11:25 p.m., and workers isolated the downed line and restored power to all but 27 customers by about 1:35 a.m. The last 27 had electricity restored about 5:10 a.m., when...

  • Nothing derogatory about animal sayings

Common language on fauna betrays an anthropocentric bias… “Words such as ‘pets’, ‘wildlife’, and ‘vermin’ are derogatory…” says the director of the Oxford Center for Animal Ethics. I imagine there are people in England who take the director seriously. But, as we watch this once-powerful nation disintegrate before our eyes, it may be observed that it has truly gone to the dogs. Even using similes like “sly as a fox’, ‘drunk as a skunk’, or ‘perky as a porpoise’ are considered animal abuse. Actually, the word ...

  • Changes to drought management plan proposed

    Kevin Wilson

Proposed changes to the city’s drought management plan would leave most elements unchanged, but give more latitude to the city to take immediate action. The ordinance, an amendment to Section 13.24.020 of the city code, is scheduled for introduction during a meeting Thursday of the Clovis City Commission. City Commissioner Randy Crowder said the main changes to the plan would alter outdated or unclear language. The city is currently in the first stage, tied to fall and summer months when water use is highest. The ordinance w... Full story

  • Farmers: Last week's rain little help

    Argen Duncan

Argen Duncan: Portales News-Tribune A pivot sprinkler waters Colin Chandler's corn field Saturday morning on N.M. 236. Even though he hasn't turned the sprinklers off since February, Chandler said, the irrigation can't keep up with the drought. Half an inch of water evaporates from the soil a day, and the sprinkler takes six days to cover a field, applying half an inch of water. The last week’s rain did little to help most area farmers and ranchers in the midst of the extreme drought. Tuesday morning, the National Weather S...

  • Fireworks choreographer shares tricks of trade

    Liliana Castillo

File photo Flight of Red Comets – To Red, White, Blue Peony Gary Caimano with Western Fireworks has choreographed the Smoke on the Water show in Clovis for more than a decade. Caimano said because Smoke on the Water show is choreographed to music, he feels he works with a cast of characters rather than pyrotechnics. “You want to have the different types of fireworks hit the sky on cue with the music,” he said. “That’s the art part of the show.” There are thousands of types of fireworks, Caimano said, including firework plumes... Full story

  • Farmers: Last week's rain little help

    Argen Duncan

The last week’s rain did little to help most area farmers and ranchers in the midst of the extreme drought. Tuesday morning, the National Weather Service reported precipitation ranging from 0.14 inches in Portales and at the Clovis airport to 1.22 inches in Clovis. “It’s as dry as I’ve ever seen it,” Broadview farmer and rancher Pat Woods said. Roosevelt County farmer Colin Chandler said most of his fields didn’t get rain and those that did received a tenth of an inch. “It was gone within the first four hours of sunlight,...

When the officer arrived, he began to check the area, and a 25-year-old woman stopped him. She said she went to the Laundromat with her 27-year-old husband. While they were there, the couple argued and returned home separately. The woman said they had four children, ages 7 to 3, who were... Full story
