  • Firefighters continue to face risks

    Karl Terry CMI columnist

It's truly amazing to me with all the wildland fires across the West this spring and summer that there has been very little loss of human life. We've had some truly huge fires this year with the Whitewater Baldy fire becoming the largest fire in state history by scorching nearly 300,000 acres. The Little Bear Fire near Ruidoso wasn't nearly as large but it has gone into the record books in New Mexico for being the most destructive to human habitation with 242 structures burned. Hundreds of firefighters have been involved in...

  • Every era has own rich history

    Clyde Davis CMI columnist

The year was 1976. Sadly, it's an admission of age just to say that I remember back that far, for I was in college at the time. It was the nation's bicentennial. I do not have any reason to believe I will see the tricentennial, so I am glad I was old enough to see this one, and young enough to enjoy it. Two events stand out in my mind, in relationship to the July 4th festivities taking place in and around Western Pennsylvania that year. One was the Allman Brothers Concert at the now defunct Three Rivers Stadium in... Full story

  • McGee: Damaged building piques curiosity

    Grant McGee CMI columnist

A few weeks ago The Lady of the House and I were leaving a church rummage sale when something across the street caught my eye: A nice fence had a gaping hole in it. It looked like some vehicle had rocketed off the road, then smashed the fence and the storage building behind it. "Wow," said The Lady of the House. "Look at that. I bet a car went through there." Last Saturday there was a yard sale at the house on the other side of the house with the damaged fence and building. "Let's go to that yard sale," I said to The Lady of... Full story

  • In Search of Ponies: Toads ingrained in New Mexico

    Sharna Johnson CMI columnist

Walking outside after the sun goes down they scatter before you like proverbial cockroaches under a light. Such was the case when I killed my first. Stepping down from the edge of the porch, I was in mid-motion when I saw it sitting there directly under my lowering shoe. Carrying a full water dish at the time, I cringed and wished but could not stop my foot from landing squarely on top of it. Of course as soon as I regained my balance, I nudged at the toad with the tip of my shoe – its lack of response confirming the m... Full story
