  • Supreme Court upholds part of Arizona immigration law

PHOENIX (AP) — Arizona officials declared victory Monday after the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the "show me your papers" provision of the state's immigration law, while immigrant rights groups vowed to prevent that part of the law from ever taking effect. While it struck down parts of the law, the court preserved a section that requires police to check the status of someone they suspect is in the U.S. illegally, but took the teeth out of it by prohibiting officers from arresting people on minor immigration charges. The j...

    Kevin Wilson CNJ staff writer

Officials polled across New Mexico doubt the Supreme Court upholding the most-discussed portion of Arizona's Senate Bill 1070 will have much local impact. But the reason why is, like Monday's decision, somewhat split. In a 5-3 opinion released Monday, the high court eliminated three portions of the law. Portions struck down by the Supreme Court included: - Making it a state crime for an immigrant to not carry papers. - Allow for warrantless arrest in some situations. - Make it a crime for an illegal immigrant to seek work in...

  • New Mexico's A-F grading system flawed

    Las Cruces Sun-News

For school administrators trying to figure out the new system, not so much. Sen. Howie Morales, D-Bayard, had urged the Department of Education to delay announcing the first set of grades until improvements could be made to make the system more understandable to those...

  • Fireworks organizers seeking donations

    Eric Butler CNJ correspondent

Certainly, organizers of Clovis' annual 4th of July fireworks display don't really favor one contributor over another. A couple of weekends ago I went to an afternoon concert. Like other weekends, this one was jam-packed, but I didn't want to miss it. After all, the granddaughter of my good friends was part of this traveling group of singers. A friend asked where my father was, because he knows how much my dad likes a cappella music. So I tell him he's in Albuquerque representing Roosevelt County at a convention. I thought of a recent conversation with one of my big city friends. One of those "you wouldn't really understand the meaning of...
