  • Pages past - June 24

the Staff of the News|Updated Jun 24, 2018

On this date ... 1953: A well-trained 5-year-old roping horse named "Chigger" was killed and another roping horse was injured when fire destroyed their barn on Clovis' East Brady Avenue. Four goats also died in the blaze, and firefighters said tools, three saddles and a ton of hay were destroyed. Owner O.D. Stevenson Jr. said he estimated losses at $1,500. The second horse, "Ginger," was under the care of a veterinarian. The fire was discovered about 10 a.m. Two fire trucks...

  • Stone still loving permanent vacation

    Kevin Wilson|Updated Jun 24, 2018

“It could have been different somehow, if I’d known what I know now.” So goes the tale from Doug Stone in his hit, “Why Didn’t I Think of That.” It’s a universal tale of regret put to song, and it’s part of what Stone will bring to the Clovis Music Festival for his Wednesday night performance. Born Doug Brooks, the country music lifer chose his performing name to avoid confusion with Garth Brooks. How did you come across the opportunity for the CMF? Booking agent? (laughs) To be honest, I don’t know much about it. They tell m...

  • So much history in our towns

    Betty Williamson|Updated Jun 24, 2018

If you have even a passing interest in New Mexico history, odds are you have at some point encountered the F. Stanley books — dozens of slim softbound volumes that tell the stories of some of our region’s tiniest communities. My first exposure was back in 1979 when I was a new student hire in Special Collections at Eastern New Mexico University’s Golden Library. I had your average college freshman’s interest in history (somewhere between little and none), but I do remembe...

  • Turnout light for Relay

    Jamie Cushman|Updated Jun 24, 2018

PORTALES — The weather was perfect and the activities were plentiful but the 2018 Relay for Life of Roosevelt County did not draw the turnout organizers were anticipating. "We were hoping for a bigger crowd so it's a little disappointing we didn't have as many folks out, but the crew that's here has been fantastic," said Casey Peacock, co-chair of the event leadership team for Relay for Life of Roosevelt County. "It's a good event. We are very appreciative of the people t...

  • Analysis: Decades later, Warrant still feels lucky making music

    Peter Stein|Updated Jun 24, 2018

CLOVIS — Big hair, electric guitars and ... mmmmm, cherry pie. If all that doesn’t make you think of the band Warrant, maybe you just don’t know rock ’n’ roll. The group perhaps best remembered for its 1990 hit “Cherry Pie,” which followed up late ’80s smashes “Down Boys,” “Sometimes She Cries” and “Heaven,” is still rocking away a few decades and five or six presidents later, and is set to perform Friday at Clovis’ Draggin’ Main Music Festival. Warrant will be playing at Clovis Community College’s Marshall Auditorium....

  • Near to Twitter famous good for me

    Kevin Wilson, Managing editor|Updated Jun 24, 2018

In this small patch of New Mexico, I’m probably better known than the average person. It’s a tiny, tiny bit of fame, and not much fortune, but I’ve never had an issue with that. Being Twitter famous? That’s a different story. I’ve had a Twitter account for years. Sometimes I post 20 times in a day, sometimes I go 20 days without a post. I usually don’t get much traction outside of a few consistent friends, but every once in a while that one comment will do just enough to get the average stranger to say, “I feel the same way;...

  • Music festival, Draggin' Main have found 'great marriage'

    Kevin Wilson|Updated Jun 23, 2018

CLOVIS — Back in 2017, the people organizing the Draggin’ Main Music Festival and the people organizing the Clovis Music Festival thought they could be better together. “That was a huge test for both sides,” Draggin’ Main co-founder Gene Porter said of last June’s festivities. “What we discovered is it was a great marriage.” Now, in 2018, that’s exactly what it is, as they plan everything together and share the same name. There’s plenty to do during the anniversary party, with three concerts, tours throughout city lan...

  • Something's squirrely 'round here

    Karl Terry, Columnist|Updated Jun 23, 2018

I probably would have grown up hunting squirrels — except we didn’t have any squirrels in Portales. That’s all changed, though, and I’m looking for squirrel recipes. As I was irrigating my petunia farm the other morning I rounded the corner of the house and nearly tripped on one of the bushy-tailed tree rodents. He casually scampered across my driveway and headed for my neighbor’s beautiful towering spruce trees. As I watered flowers a neighbor appeared and I asked if she sa...

  • Native Justify jockey worked for his success

    Albuquerque Journal|Updated Jun 23, 2018

New Mexico native Mike Smith rode Justify into the history books on June 9, capturing the coveted Triple Crown with a victory in the Belmont Stakes. Justify became just the 13th horse since 1919 to earn the Triple Crown — victories in one year by a 3-year-old thoroughbred in the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes. Smith, a 52-year-old jockey who was born in Roswell and grew up in Dexter, became the oldest jockey to win the Triple Crown. It’s one of the sports world’s toughest feats, and it has catap...
