CNJ Editorial Seldom do we stand on formality or political correctness. Most times the fans of those forms of group-think use them to stifle voices and opinions that disagree with theirs. However, a recently successful effort to change the racially insensitive and derogatory nickname of an eastern New Mexico landmark deserves loud applause. The site, a dot of a hill near Lingo, along the Texas border in southern Roosevelt County, has been unofficially but widely known for generations as “Nigger Hill.” How that hill came b...
Grant McGee: Local Columnist I make no apologies for feeling the need to get out of Clovis every now and then on a road trip. I wanted some mountains, I wanted a break from the heat. Flagstaff, Ariz., is known for being cool. It’s directly west of us once you get up on I-40. So my friend Road Buddy and I rolled out of Clovis one recent Saturday morning. There was a pack of smokes in the console of Road Buddy’s car. Road Buddy said they belonged to a previous passenger and needed to be tossed. “Why waste them?” I... Full story
Habla español? Yo no espeako espanish, but as for Spanglish – a mixture of Spanish and English – si, yo espeako most of that. After a lifetime of speaking broken Spanish, slang and Spanglish, I’m finally on the road to learning Spanish once and for all. There have been all kinds of excuses and blame assigned over the years. But enough. At age 36, I’ve decided to become a child all over again and learn to speak Spanish from scratch. This summer I’m taking Spanish 101 at Eastern New Mexico University. For someone...

With the start of summer comes the start of concerns over skin cancer. More than 1 million new cases of skin cancer are treated in the United States each year, according to the American Academy of Dermatology Web site. “Most family practitioners can check for it,” Roosevelt General Hospital Administrator James D’Agostino said. “If it’s deeper into the skin then the patient will have to go to a dermatologist.” Patricia Green, a Portales physician, said she is able to treat skin moles and tumors. “We look at the... The parking lot of the state labor department’s Clovis branch was virtually empty Thursday afternoon. Inside the building, Bethany Hanner — a 20-year-old who lost her job on Tuesday — searched the labor department’s online database for work. “This place has been helpful,” she said. She was the only one there looking for a job. “These new businesses in Clovis have helped; unemployment in Clovis has gone down lately ... and we’ve been a little slower,” said June Orozco, an employment representative in her... A porch swing is a gift of relaxation. You can swing and read a book, bird watch, or just watch the world go by. Sitting in the porch swing with loved ones in the evening made happy childhood memories for me. Enjoying the night air and relaxing in the stillness of it brought calmness to everyone. Stomach ulcers were not heard of. I believe the porch swing was a great “tranquilizer of a bygone age.” I think it can be today. Who needs a pill if you have a swing? A swing removes tension while swinging worries away. You hear... Full story
