  • The cruise is on

    Peter Stein - Staff writer|Updated Jun 19, 2020

CLOVIS - There will be a Draggin' Main celebration this year, but what kind of event will it be? Concerts and nostalgia are usually the main entrées. But this is a most unusual year because of COVID-19, so the concerts are out. Organizers will try to squeeze in as much nostalgia as they can, with as much socializing as a still largely socially distant culture will allow. The Main Street Cruise is on, starting at 5 p.m. Saturday. That's it as far as anything official. "We're...

  • Draggin' Main: Our stories from the red bricks

    Updated Jun 16, 2020

Remembering that mustard car My niece Tammy and I were doing our regular dragging main on a beautiful April Sunday evening back in 1989. Who couldn't spot this little yellow mustard-looking sports car? I took a glance at the handsome driver wearing these cool-looking Ray-Ban sunglasses. It was love at first sight. We honked and waved at each other. I was so full of butterflies. After a couple cruises he disappeared and I didn't see him again. I was sad. Where did this little y...

I had surgery when I was 4, and after...

  • Opinion: Incredibly thankful to both my father and my Father

    Curtis Shelburne|Updated Jun 16, 2020

In the midst of this roller coaster year and its blur of events and emotions, we’re speeding toward Father’s Day. As I find myself thinking of my father, my thoughts quickly turn in immense gratitude to my Father for giving me such an incredible gift, my earthly father. If anyone asked me for the name of the best man I have ever known, I’d not have to pause a nanosecond before replying, “G.B. Shelburne Jr.” My dad. I’ve said that many times, not because I feel haughty abo...

  • Opinion: 'Teleporting' definite contender for best childhood memory

    Betty Williamson|Updated Jun 16, 2020

This ditty has been making the rounds lately on wall plaques, t-shirts, and social media posts: “Best childhood memory: Falling asleep on the couch and waking up in bed. I miss teleporting. It never happens to me anymore.” At my house, we didn’t “teleport” often from the couch — we were nudged to wakefulness and sent on our way. But on occasion, we did succeed in hitching a sleepy ride — about 30 yards or so — from the back of the family car, across the yard, and inside to our...

  • Opinion: We need police; also need review of procedures

    Dallas Morning News|Updated Jun 16, 2020

As protests sparked by the killing of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer continue across the country, police procedures and budgets everywhere are coming in for a reexamination. Our advice in this debate is focus on a few facts. We need the police even as we also need to address underlying issues in how communities are policed and how and why progress leaves some communities behind. So beyond the rhetoric, proposed reforms shouldn’t center on disbanding police departments, but what they can focus on is reducing c...

  • Opinion: Respecting liberty will still work

    Kent McManigal|Updated Jun 16, 2020

The world’s a bit crazy. Not as bad here as in other places, but we see the effects of those crazy paces even here. Pandemics, riots, gangs of trespassers setting up their own governments ... what’s next? A volcano spewing out zombies? Whatever happens next, you can rest assured that respecting liberty will still work. It always does. It would even work against the volcano zombie invasion. No matter how crazy the world gets, you don’t have to be crazy with it. Aren’t you gla...

  • Alinsky's methods still working

    Tom McDonald|Updated Jun 16, 2020

A lot of people are comparing 2020 to 1968 these days, and for good reason. This year is at least as tumultuous as ’68, and we’re only halfway through it. Generationally, 1968 was beset with Baby Boomers who opposed the Vietnam War and sympathized with the Black Power movement of that time. Now, in 2020 we’ve got Generation Z and Millennials expressing their outrage over America’s failing institutions, with a growing intolerance for that which keeps African-Americans and other minorities down. It’s ironic that the boomers and...

  • Opinion: That time DA, sheriff engaged in 'fracas'

    David Stevens - Staff|Updated Jun 16, 2020

Today we have Facebook. But there was a time when upstanding citizens settled their differences face-to-face. That’s what happened 70 years ago this month when a pair of Quay County law officers engaged in a spirited disagreement that media outlets described as a “fracas.” The trouble, according to The Associated Press, began on June 18, 1950, when Clovis District Attorney Richard Rowley signed off on search warrants for a pair of Tucumcari establishments. There was evidence that illegal gambling may have been taking place at...

CLOVIS — A district judge ruled Monday for a default judgment in favor of two siblings who were injured in a shooting nearly three years ago at the Clovis-Carver Public Library. The judgment came after the primary defendant did not appear for court procedures. • Budget focus of special session

    Kevin Wilson - Staff|Updated Jun 16, 2020

Local legislators don’t expect much of a battle when a special legislative session starts Thursday to deal with coronavirus-related budget woes. The next few years, however, could be — in the words of “Die Hard” protagonist John McClane — “Double Jeopardy!, where the scores can really change.” State Sen. Pat Woods, R-Broadview, said he doesn’t expect much acrimony from lawmakers when they meet Thursday at the Roundhouse in Santa Fe to tackle an estimated $2.4 billion loss of revenue over two years caused by plunging oil an...
