  • Jail officer charged with assisting escape

    David Grieder|Updated Jun 18, 2018

CLOVIS — Friends and family of the Clovis detention officer arrested Saturday for assisting in the escape of three detainees said they were in disbelief. Sarina Dodson, 28, of Clovis, was jailed early Saturday morning in Lubbock and accused of providing “inside assistance” toward the escape less than 24 hours earlier of Curry County Detention Center inmates Aaron Clark, Victor Apodaca and Ricky Sena, according to Sheriff Wesley Waller. The trio remained at large Satur... Full story

  • Perfect day: 'Alone with God and my camera'

    Updated Jun 18, 2018

My husband Fred and I have been married 27 years and we have four kids — Ace, Jake, Ella, and Azuma — and a beautiful daughter in love, Hayley. I just celebrated my 20th Wal-Mart anniversary on May 28. My fellow associates are my second family — I love them all so much. Before that, I worked at the Tower Twin theater for 10 years. My favorite food is still popcorn. Back in the '90s, Fred and I were in a band called "Rozz Well and the Aliens." That was one of the best times of...

  • Gal baby remembers Daddy and Kipling

    Betty Williamson|Updated Jun 17, 2018

Jim Williamson was just a few weeks shy of his 49th birthday when he became a dad in the early 1960s, considerably older than most guys picking up their first diaper pin. Within two and a half years, he and my mom had three of us. I was the “gal baby,” sandwiched between brothers. I have vivid early memories of my brothers and me piling onto the bench seat of the old red pickup, our dad at the steering wheel, the bed filled with burlap sacks of cottonseed meal, off to feed the... Full story

  • Overcome shifts; don't outlaw them

    Kevin Wilson, Managing editor|Updated Jun 17, 2018

Life has unwritten rules. Always double down on 11. Never cross the streams. You can’t date your friend’s sibling unless you’re considering marriage. When it comes to baseball, I usually think unwritten rules exist because they’re too stupid to write down. Don’t steal signs from the catcher? Maybe there’s a better code out there than, “One finger for fastball.” You can’t bunt to break up a no-hitter. What if it’s 1-0? I’m sure you want your career highlight, but I’d still like to try to win the game. Which brings us to the... Full story

  • Looking back, still in awe of Daddy

    Karl Terry, Columnist|Updated Jun 17, 2018

I read a couple of Facebook posts that really set the mood for my Father’s Day. First there was a post of a video showing a young girl starting irrigation siphon tubes. Right underneath that post Editor David Stevens asked us to post a photo of our father. Seeing those irrigation tubes reminded me of watching my dad do the same thing. I didn’t have a photo of him “setting” irrigation tubes but I did have a photo of him driving an old John Deere tractor at New Mexico Ag Expo...

  • Praises to The King of Himself

    Wendel Sloan, Columnist|Updated Jun 17, 2018

Here is my latest sermon to butter up my flock at The Podcast Church for Couch Potatoes — where I am the Minister of Defense Against Little White Lies and Great Big Whoppers. To avoid interfering with tee-offs, tip-offs, brush-offs and shove-offs, I keep sermons under three minutes — depending on members’ listening speed. I am not trying to poach anyone Don Jr. style, but if you have never heard me preach, I am happy to share today’s sermon with non-member couch potatoe...

  • Medicare, Social Security systems need fixing now

    Philadelphia Inquirer|Updated Jun 17, 2018

When we’re old and sick and poor, we might be forced to keep warm by burning all the government reports that we ignored, warning us that Social Security and Medicare are running out of money; the latest such report was issued this month. According to the Social Security Administration, the Medicare trust fund will run dry in 2026 and Social Security funds in 2034. They will still be supported by payroll taxes, but those taxes will not cover full benefits, and recipients will likely experience severe benefit cuts if the funds...

Information on dealing with lactose intolerance and the mouth’s central role in health will be the featured topics on “Creative Living” on Tuesday at 9:30 p.m. and on Thursday at noon. (All times are Mountain.) Sarah Ryan is a registered dietitian nutritionist, and she explains that not all “milks” are created equal. She’ll compare other types of milks to cow’s milk, which is affordable and easy to find. Even if someone in your family has lactose intolerance, they can also...

the Staff of the News|Updated Jun 17, 2018

On this date ... 1968: Clovis was preparing to host "a three-day combination of business and frolic" when newspapermen (and women) arrived for the New Mexico Press Association's summer convention. The convention was set to open with a cocktail party at the Holiday Inn. A dinner and dance were slated to wrap up activities at the hotel, the Clovis News-Journal reported. Gov. David Cargo was among keynote speakers. Others included Amarillo Globe News Publisher Wes Izzard and...

  • Weather no damper on having a good time

    David Grieder|Updated Jun 17, 2018

CLOVIS — Celebrated as the rain may be in eastern New Mexico, it put a slight damper on the outdoor programming Saturday in Clovis. But only a slight one. Hundreds still convened for a combined Juneteenth effort in Potter Park, and 22 cars still ran down a section of Sycamore Street for the 17th annual Clovis Soap Box Derby. Both events had to wrap up somewhat sooner than first forecast, but it's hard to be too put off by precipitation in the summer. Portales also hosted a d...
