  • Partnership discussed for Ute Project

Staff report At the Eastern New Mexico Water Utility Authority meeting on Thursday morning, Executive Director Justin Howalt discussed the viability of entering a public-private partnership to complete the Ute Water Project. According to Howalt, he has talked to “a group out of Denver, MWH,” who discussed public-private partnerships. He said that a partnership like this would give MWH a larger time frame to collect a return on their investment. “It’s a secure rate of return for them. They’re not looking to get a return on...

  • Rodriguez: Good times at old community center

    Helena Rodriguez

As a child, I remember blowing up balloons and sticking pasty strips of newspaper around them. After our papier mache projects dried, we added festive paper and streamers and they became piñatas. We weaved colorful yarn around popsicle sticks to create bright, ornamental ojos de dios. We also painted murals of Emiliano Zapata, Cesar Chavez, and the Aztec eagle, as I have shared before. It was there at that summer youth program, at the North Portales Community Center at... Full story

  • Brown: Remember tractor drivers with special treats

Cappuccino and a Twinkie. That might sound like a feast, an odd combination, or just a snack. It depends on the situation. On the tractor, it’s all of the above and more. Audra Brown Down on the Farm Days spent on a tractor are long. Wise folks will tell you to take your own lunch, probably supper too, lots of snacks, and a full ice chest. But even if you are consistently so prepared, there are always times when somehow, you end up getting hungry. In a perfect story, every tim...

  • Shelburne: Story of two fathers, two sons

    Curtis Shelburne

Had the brokenhearted father been one of the self- or demon-deluded pagans whose lives are described in the same amazing volume which chronicles his, perhaps the grisly request of a bloodthirsty “deity” for still more blood would have made a kind of morbid sense. Exactly how the request came, and what form it took, we’re not told, but that it was a true and authentic command of the only true and living God was absolutely a matter of no doubt. Not to him. Not to Abraham. The ...

  • Religion Q&A: Abdoulaye Sarr talks pride in faith

Abdoulaye Sarr currently runs the Portales Islamic Center, described by Sarr as a very communal place for those who practice the Islamic faith in Portales. The center first opened in 1983. However, when Sarr transferred to Eastern New Mexico University in 2006, he noticed that the center had not been open and hoped to start the center back up in the hopes of bringing Muslims from the community together to practice their faith. • McManigal: Anti-gun laws take our protection

As long as people exist, there will be bad people harming others. I realize this is upsetting news — it saddens me, too. The belief that laws will stop bad people is one of the most dangerous delusions ever to take root. Whether in a free society or a police state, bad people will do bad things. Kent McManigal One benefit of a free society will be the lack of laws helping attackers carry out their evil plans. That includes the anti-gun laws that gave the Orlando night club m...

  • UNM on right track to ensure student safety

Investigations into allegations of sexual harassment or sexual assault involving University of New Mexico students and employees will move at a faster pace. The U.S. Department of Justice released a report earlier this year criticizing what it called sometimes confusing policies at UNM that could discourage students from reporting sex-related offenses. It also criticized UNM for failing to publicize the processes for reporting and singled out UNM’s Office of Equal Opportunity for taking too long to investigate complaints. Muc...

  • Render: Obama, Clinton fooled by terrorists

The political correctness coming out of the left, led by the president of the United States and his designated successor, with their predisposition to blame gun owners instead of radical jihadists for mass killings, is making a growing number of Americans crazy. Rube Render After each terror attack, the president addresses the nation with assurances that America can absorb these attacks and that we can stop them if only we had more stringent gun control. As more information...

  • City commissioners table gun-range proposal

Staff report Three hours of debate Thursday night on a proposed public shooting range on city property revealed that far more debate was needed. And so the Clovis City Commission voted, by a 5-3 count, to table a proposal allowing the state to construct and the city to maintain a 720-acre shooting facility at the city-owned Ned Houk Park. The city was first approached about the matter in 2014 by the state game and fish department, and in March the parks, recreation and beautification committee approved recommending the item... Full story

  • Faith: Being in Christ makes someone new

    Judy Brandon

Religion columnist My sister Susie shared this email with me several years ago. I think it is worth sharing again in its original form. I can add nothing to it. She gave me her permission to share it with my readers. Dear Judy, Today I heard one of the most inspirational women I have ever encountered. When I saw this woman walk into the room, I was taken back. It was apparent that “Jane” was a fan of tattoos. When it was announced that Jane would be giving her faith story, I k...
