  • 'Horsing' around

    Freedom Newspapers

With poise and confidence, Cindy Vaughan slowly led her horse into the arena at the Curry County Fairgrounds. Her light brown ringlets peeking out from a patriotic-themed helmet, the 45-year-old Clovis resident waited patiently to compete in the horsemanship at halter category. “I practice a lot,” she said, “and I like it (competing) because I do good,” said Vaughan, one of more than 20 athletes competing Friday morning in the Special Olympics Equestrian Games at the Mounted Patrol Arena. She said she wasn’t nervous t...

Located in the shadow of the Sierra Blanca mountains, Fort Stanton was established on May 4, 1855. It was named for Capt. Henry W. Stanton, who was killed by an Apache during a skirmish, according to the Fort Stanton Web site, www.fortstanton.com. A museum documenting the history of Fort Stanton is operated by volunteers, working to preserve and maintain...

  • Shooting case difficult for investigators one year later

    Freedom Newspapers

At the edge of Sgt. Dan Aguilar’s desk are two cardboard expanding files stuffed with papers to the point of bursting. They are the case files for 10-year-old Carlos Perez, who died a year ago Friday while sleeping in his bed. He said he put the files away several times, but then something would come up and he would have to pull them all out again, until one day he just stopped putting them away. Reflecting on the case, Aguilar solemnly recalled Perez was getting ready to celebrate his 11th birthday the day after he died. S... Full story

Her head cradled by the shoulder of another woman, low moans rolled from Lupe Perez. This day last year, her 10-year-old son was slain while asleep in his bed. On the anniversary of Carlos Perez’ death, the grief carried by his family, friends and classmates is still raw. To honor Carlos, family and friends gathered Friday on the lawn of Cameo Elementary School. About 60 people, mostly relatives of Carlos, joined his former classmates and teachers. They remembered a boy who had the spirit to confront bullies, a smile that l...

  • Consistency key to good parenting

Lately, my oldest daughter, Luisa, has been testing my ability to be a consistent parent. Every night, she asks to come in my bed when her younger sisters are asleep. I have allowed her to do so on occasions, but since my husband’s deployment her requests have increased in duration — “Can I stay for the whole night?” — and in frequency — “Can I come to your bed for 150 days?” With the arrival of our new baby, I have felt unable to give my children enough individual attention, and Luisa has found that in the evening, after...

  • Cannon pilot crashes, avoids farmhouse

    Don McAlavy

First Lt. Thomas W. Seuffert of Dayton, Ohio, “took extraordinary measures and increasing that hazard to himself in guiding his disabled aircraft from an inhabited farmhouse. “The 25-year-old Korean War veteran was killed at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 22, 1954, when he attempted to get his F-86 Sabrejet airborne for a routine training mission,” said Cannon Air Force Base Commander Col. James F. Whisenand. The base runway running diagonally southeast to northwest, with the pilot taking off northwest into the wind, was the r... Full story

  • National Chicken Month is upon us

A little bird, quite aptly, told me that September is National Chicken Month. For New Mexico this is an extra-special thing since the land is enchanted with a few distinctive chickens of its own. The foremost to be honored is the glorious High Plains prairie chicken, for which an entire festival has been created in Milnesand. Other New Mexico chickens that can pretty much be ignored are the ones that hide from the cops behind Tucumcari gas stations or the Clovis chickens that cower in the 11th Street alleyway in the...

  • Time waits for no man (or woman

    Bob Huber

(Editor’s Note: WARNING—The following column may produce symptoms of depression and queasy stomachs and should not be taken lightly by people over the age of 60. Old news reporters are also advised to avoid alcohol after consuming.) There is definitely too much time slipping through our fingers these days — you’d think Mr. Bush would do something about it — and if you don’t believe it, ask loyal readers Pat and Ed Watson of Portales who sent me a list of lady celebrities and their ages. In a side note Pat asked: “How’s this f... Full story

  • Blind hatred, intolerance have been around for generations

This was another piece of the family reunion we attended several weeks ago. It was the less joyful piece, and it was the piece that made one stop and think about a darker side of life. It was a piece of this family’s history, but in other forms, it is a piece of other family histories as well. It is known in many stories but with one point, and that point is appropriate, this close to Sept. 11. The family from which my wife’s dad came had emigrated from Russia in the early 1900s, having been part of a German influx to the...

  • Happiness comes when we learn to trust in God

    Curtis Shelburne

What are the ingredients for a happy life? How do we find happiness? With the Galilean countryside stretching out below him and the Sea of Galilee in the distance, Jesus, in what we call “The Sermon on the Mount,” talked to his listeners about the Kingdom of God and how to be part of that Kingdom, and what a person looks like who submits to the “rule and reign of God” in his life. Was Jesus just another religious teacher? Just another rabbi among many? No! And one of the cle... Full story

  • Deployments: Making the best of the situation

Janet Birkey Marc Abel is part of a different group of military spouses – a male who will make permanent change of station moves, but doesn’t deploy. As an Airman’s husband, he is the one left behind to handle the everyday stuff and figure out how to make a satisfying life that can be both lived alone and with his wife. He has not only survived the deployment of his wife, Maj. Barbara Ochsner, 27th Logistics Readiness Squadron, but has chosen to make the best of a less-than-ideal situation. With their 1-year-old daugh...
