  • Tomboy more comfortable in mud

Nicole was a tomboy. No, more accurately she was a cowboy. She favored cow work to Barbie dolls. She was Dad’s right-hand man. By age 15, she could pull her weight, from building fence to pulling calves. Last spring to celebrate the coming of sunshine, the community of Hanna in southeastern Alberta was having “supper and a do.” Nicole had strict instructions from her mother that her attendance was mandatory and she would be required to dress like a lady and behave appropriately. On the big day she spent two hours at the h...

  • Elida flea market set for Saturday

The township of Elida is having a flea market Saturday with arts and crafts, homemade barbecue and ice cream, and a chance to get to know a place that was once the same size as Portales. “The idea was to sort of promote the town,” organizer Judy Dukes said. “It’s an older, dying community with a lot of retired people and I realized a lot of them are artistic people.” The flea market is in its third year, running one Saturday during each summer month. This year’s circuit runs 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Dukes said she started...

  • Have you hugged someone today?

    Joan Clayton

I think we should have a “Hug Day.” I would be lost if I didn’t have hugs from friends and loved ones. Hugs make me happy. Hugs tell me someone likes me, and that fills me with delight. I feel it takes hugs for one’s well being. I read somewhere that husbands who hug their wives live, on average, five years longer than those who do not. Many years of teaching little people brought hugs as far as they could reach. I hugged back at least 25 times a day. Guess what? My students have grown up, and I get lots of hugs these d...

  • My turn: Apology to my Facebook friends

Thanks to my technical ignorance, I may have accidentally offended a number of Facebook friends. After recently discovering the “Like” button, when I’ve been especially enthusiastic about a post, I’ve been clicking twice — thinking this was like adding an exclamation point. Well, I found out this week that two clicks turns “Like” into “Unlike.” So, my apology to everyone who announced the birth of a child or grandchild, cruised the Greek Isles or prepared a masterpiece. I assure you I have nothing against children, Gree...

  • ENMU student holding bake sale to benefit children with cancer

    Argen Duncan

For one Eastern New Mexico University student, a cartoon-watching session with her son turned into an effort to raise money for children with cancer. Marissa Hyde, a sophomore in public relations, is organizing a Heritage Days bake sale in conjunction with Cookies for Kids’ Cancer, an organization that contributes money to pediatric cancer research. As far as she knows, her bake sale will be the first for Cookies for Kids’ Cancer in Portales. “Because I’m a mother, I’m thankful every day my son isn’t sick,” she said. “But I...

  • More heat, high winds predicted for area

    Kevin Wilson

If you can’t stand the heat, then ... this really wasn’t the week to live in Eastern New Mexico. The area has been marked by triple-digit highs in the daytime. “This period is normally our hot period,” said Dierdre Kann of the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, “even though it does normally happen a little later.” Kann warned that winds should still be powerful over this weekend. That’s been a cause for concern in Curry County, where nearly 3,500 customers lost power on Tuesday night and another 2,000 lost power on...

Police said no charges have been filed and fire officials had not determined the cause of the blaze early Thursday night. The home sustained heavy smoke and fire damage but no injuries were reported.
