link Patti Dobson By: Patti Dobson Sometimes we have to get knocked around a bit by life to figure out — or remember — the things (or people) that really matter. We get so caught up in the busyness of life that we forget to just be, to take a time out and enjoy the journey. We’re not promised tomorrow. When I was younger, this didn’t make sense to me. Who am I kidding? Because of youthful arrogance, I blew right past that statement because it had zero meaning for me....

The Clovis City Commission met Thursday at the North Annex of the Clovis-Carver Public Library. All commissioners and Mayor David Lansford were present. All items listed below passed on 8-0 votes: • The commission tabled an easement request on the 3600 block of Benjamin Davis for a fence that encroached into the alley by 9.6 feet. Commissioner Randy Crowder said the easement created an access problem because the entire area had rear garage access that effectively made the alley a city street. He asked commissioners to go...
Cattle operations all have specific accepted terminology. link Audra Brown In what is commonly referred to as a “cow-calf” operation, we use the term, “pair,” a lot. This word, in common vernacular, is relatively nonspecific, usually meaning two of something, and often with the implied idea that the two somethings are alike or a matched set in some way. In a cow-calf operation, a pair is a very specific thing. A pair is a cow and a calf, where that cow is the mother...

If you’re going to make your opinion public, be prepared for the backlash. link Joshua Lucero I’ve seen a rash of online opinion posting in recent days, mostly due to the Caitlyn Jenner cover of Vanity Fair magazine. There are the posts expressing support and kindness, with those posts being of the opinion what Jenner has done was positive, courageous and brave. Then of course, there are the posts that have the exact opposite opinion. These posts aim to discredit Jenner...

More than three years ago, David Lansford defeated Gayla Brumfield in the Clovis mayoral election to win back the position he previously held for three years. In a much smaller vote Thursday, Lansford decided to keep Brumfield on the Eastern New Mexico Water Utility Authority when the Clovis City Commission deadlocked 4-4 on her reappointment. His decision was made following a 30-minute pitch from Brumfield and her supporters, and a 40-minute recess called by Lansford when he visibly struggled with the vote to keep or oust...

Staff report A little bit of rain — well, actually a lot — ended up to be no match for maintenance crews at Ned Houk Motor Sports Complex. But the nearly 11 inches of rain did put up a fight. “It was in the worst shape I’ve ever seen it since I’ve been out there,” said complex general manager Ray Reeser, who has been affiliated with the racing associated for about 10 years. “I had two-foot washouts on the main stretch, (and) there was one on the exit road.” With a little bit of work, and a lot of new dirt...
Through observation over my adult life — and especially lately — I have come to a conclusion: city councils are the realm of the petty megalomaniac. They all seem to have this idea that enforceable rules must be applied to the people they “govern.” link Kent McManigal This is sad, perverted, harmful and radically anti-American. It’s always triggered by a few people who don’t beg for permission or pay the demanded bribe — city officials call them permits ...

DEPUTY EDITOR [email protected] Legend has it that Billy the Kid's tombstone was stolen twice in recent history, so Fort Sumner's Chamber of Commerce decided to create the Tombstone Races in commemoration of the thievery. “Well, Billy the Kid's tombstone had been stolen … but we always got it back,” said Alan Sparks, chamber president. “The last time it was stolen, it was in California.
