Teacher shortages are making headlines across the country. The Learning Policy Institute tells us more than 200,000 teachers leave the profession each year. Teachers in the Portales Municipal School District will receive the equivalent of 3% annual raises as a quarterly stipend added to their May 30 paychecks in compliance with legislation approved by the New Mexico Legislature in its 2022 session, the school board decided on Monday. No more state tax on Social Security benefits for most New Mexicans. That’s one of the actions Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham approved by signing House Bill 163 into law Wednesday.
