  • Thomas resigns from Clovis softball post

The Staff of The News|Updated May 23, 2018

CLOVIS — For the third time in five seasons, the Clovis High softball program is looking for a new coach. Clovis Athletic Director Dale Fullerton confirmed Brandi Thomas turned in her resignation Tuesday. She leaves Clovis as its career wins leader at 103 and made the state softball tournament twice. The two most recent seasons were the toughest they've ever been, however, with 2-24 records in both the 2017 and 2018 seasons. Thomas was two years into her second stint as s...

Steps we can take before arming teachers I recently saw a program about Southwestern High School in Shelbyville, Indiana. It has been named “The safest school in America.” The preventions that they have implemented make so much sense. The entire system costs about $400,000. They were able to accomplish this through grants and other funding. I know this sounds like an astronomical amount of money, but can you pick out a child at one of our schools and tell them, “You are not worth the money?” Could you tell your own child,... Full story

  • Nothing to celebrate with groundbreaking for jail renovations

    Updated May 22, 2018

Curry County on Tuesday celebrated the groundbreaking for $11.6 million worth of improvements to the jail. But many of us are not celebrating. That’s because county officials asked voters three times, in three dramatically different ways over three years, for money to renovate the jail or build a new one. Three times voters said no. And so county commissioners just took the money, raising sales taxes for the next 19 years to generate $14 million plus interest. It’s ironic that the last sentence on the county agenda at the... Full story

  • County breaks ground on jail addition

    Jamie Cushman|Updated May 22, 2018

CLOVIS - Current and former Curry County officials looked to turn the page on Tuesday as the county held a ceremonial groundbreaking for its detention center addition and renovation project that has been debated for nearly a decade. "We're starting a new chapter in our history of our county today and we're ending an old chapter," former Commissioner Bobby Sandoval said. "The new chapter is great that we're doing this. The old chapter that I'm talking about is a sad chapter... Full story

  • Clovis school board approves budget

    Jamie Cushman|Updated May 22, 2018

CLOVIS — The Clovis Municipal Schools Board of Education unanimously approved the budget for the upcoming school year at Tuesday's meeting. Assistant Superintendent of Finance Shawna Russel said state-mandated raises to teachers' salaries added about $2 million to the budget, which will be made up in part through cuts to the district's maintenance, operations and technology budgets. Russel said 75 percent of the total budget is spent inside the classroom either through direct instruction or other services for students. B...

PORTALES — After winning a district title for a 10th-straight year and finishing with a perfect league record, not to mention a valiant effort at the 4A state tournament earlier this month, it should come as no surprise that three Portales senior softball standouts will represent the Rams at this year's 2018 North-South All-Star game at the University of New Mexico. The game, which pits the best senior softball players from around the state against one another, will feature D...

  • Laws themselves a senseless crime

    Kent McManigal|Updated May 22, 2018

Droughts are a serious problem. They cause wildfires, dirt storms, crop failure, and they deplete the aquifer. Droughts are harmful and dangerous. Someone should do something! Why aren’t droughts illegal already? On the other hand, you don’t want floods, either. Or property-damaging hail or tornadoes. Those should be criminalized as well. There needs to be a legal minimum and maximum amount of rainfall each month, and bans on assault weather, so everyone is safe and hea...
