  • Governor: Cannon has "less than 50-50" chance

Staff and Wire Reports WASHINGTON — Defenders of Cannon Air Force Base will learn late this week whether three anxious months of lobbying can reverse the Pentagon’s decision to close the base. Beginning today, the nine-member Base Closure and Realignment Commission is scheduled to take a series of votes to settle the fate of Cannon and 32 other major military bases as part of the Pentagon’s massive cost-saving effort. “I feel that we have an outside chance, but less than 50-50,” New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson said Tuesday in... Full story

  • Cautious optimism takes hold with local base supporters

Randy Harris said he has every reason to believe Base Closure and Realignment commissioners will spare Cannon Air Force Base when they hold hearings this week in Washington. “When the commissioners were here (at Cannon in June), they saw unencroached air space, an unencroached (bombing) range, the ability to expand,” said Harris, one of eastern New Mexico’s leaders in the fight to keep Cannon. “They saw not near enough savings to justify the costs of what closing Cannon would do to this community. ... CNJ staff

Sophomore Luis Esparza recorded a hat trick and added two assists Tuesday to lead the Clovis High boys soccer team to an 8-2 rout of New Mexico Military Institute at Yucca Soccer Complex. Seven players contributed at least one goal or one assist for the Wildcats (3-1), who were coming off a second-place finish on Saturday in the season-opening Clovis Invitational. Despite the lopsided victory, CHS coach Shaun Gill said his team could have played better. “We dominated, which we should have,” Gill said. “We just didn’t play up...

  • Zias make playoffs their "one goal"

    Freedom Newspapers

After tripling its win total last season, the third-year Eastern New Mexico University women’s soccer squad is looking for continued progress this season. The Zias went from 3-12 in 2003 to a 9-9-2 mark last year (2-5-2 Lone Star Conference), narrowly missing a spot in the six-team LSC postseason tournament. “It was exciting to make that much of an improvement,” sophomore midfielder Nicole Bregler of Alamogordo said. “But it was kind of bittersweet — we improved so much, but we didn’t reach our goal.” Third-year co... Full story

(Staff photo: Sharna Johnson) After a forgettable 2004 season, the Lady Wildcats are hoping a youth movement and quick legs will bring them a winning season and the second playoff berth in school history. Clovis coach Larry Jones said his inexperienced team has a lot to learn coming off a four-win season. “We are learning the basics all over again,” Jones said. “Mo...

  • Numbers are clear, and in Cannon's corner

Fittingly, the fate of Cannon Air Force Base started with numbers and they will greatly impact the outcome. The numbers are clearer now than they were last spring because we know more about the numbers behind our national defense leaders’ plan to close the base. Not all the numbers are pretty and many Air Force and Department of Defense numbers are flat wrong. But it helps to understand this complex process by breaking down some of the key ones: • Fifteen weeks ago, America’s defense leaders announced Cannon Air Force Base...

  • Mileage standards could be much better

    Kevin Wilson

When I took a look at the CNN Web site on Tuesday morning, I couldn’t help but give a slight amount of approval to the Bush administration, or at least the first sentence of the story I uploaded. “The Bush administration announced new fuel economy rules Tuesday that require improved mileage for the sport/utility vehicles and other light trucks that have captured a majority of U.S. auto sales,” it said. To this news I countered, “It’s about time.” As anybody who knows me can tell, I’m not the biggest fan of SUVs, often saying...

Some families didn’t get out for church on Sunday. However, the school busses were able to get to most places where there were students to pick up the first day of school Monday. Fair booths The w...

  • Aug. 24 Dora News

Dora has received several inches of rain but nobody is complaining about the muddy roads or “lakes” in yards or anywhere else. Because of it, we get to see green grass and big milo heads in local grain fields. Bad roads This is only a temporary condition due to so much rain in some areas. Some senior citizens in these areas need to be checked on daily — especially if they live alone. This would be something people can do to help out those in need. Reminder Thursday is “Old Timers” day at the fair. There will be a luncheon...

  • Rumsfeld predicts approval for much of base-closing plan

Liz Sidoti: The Associated Press WASHINGTON — Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld predicted Tuesday that a federal commission will endorse “the overwhelming majority” of his proposals to close, shrink or expand hundreds of military bases across the country. For its part, the nine-member panel has promised not to rubber-stamp the Pentagon chief’s plan, and commissioners say changes are likely before they send their final report to President Bush next month. Previous commissions — in 1988, 1991, 1993 and 1995 — altered abo...
