    Graduating on Friday night meant the end of one chapter in life for David Lucero and 138 other newly tasseled Portales High School graduates. But it also marked the beginning of a new chapter. “The thing I will miss most about high school is being able to see all of my friends, everyone who I have known since elementary school,” Lucero said shortly after walking across the stage to receive his high school diploma at Greyhound Arena.     Anthony Sapp, 16, of Portales was upgraded to stable condition Friday at Lubbock Covenant Children’s Hospital. The teenager suffered a head injury Wednesday when thrown from a vehicle driven by a friend — another 16-year-old. It happened at the 1900 block of S. Roosevelt Rd. 4 1/2. Sapp was taken to Roosevelt General Hospital before being transfered to Lubbock for further treatment....

    Curry County will receive $6,588 in federal stimulus money through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 for emergency food and shelter. The federal cash will be distributed to local food and shelter programs that meet a May 29 application deadline. A local board made up of the United Way, Salvation Army, Food Bank, Local Emergency Planning Committee, American Red Cross and St. John Baptist Church will determine what agencies receive cash. A rabid skunk bit an unvaccinated dog, then died, a press release said. The dog will euthanized to prevent it from developing rabies and potentially exposing other animals and people, a press release said. A rabid skunk bit an unvaccinated dog in the Clovis area, said Chris Minnick with the Department of Health. The remains of the skunk were submitted for testing and the results were known about two days ago, Minnick said.     Freedom New Mexico Clovis MainStreet is continuing its revitalization efforts by creating a Facade Squad, to help repaint buildings in the downtown district on Saturday.     When the town of Blacktower faded away, the only thing left behind was its dead. The Blacktower Cemetery, located west of the Chavez West Housing edition near Cannon Air Force Base, appears to be a fraction of what it used to be. About eight headstones stick inches, and possibly feet, above blow sand that has covered the century-old cemetery.
